Liability Insurance as a Boarder
that’s what i thought too. i asked for specifics as to why the policy would cost me so much and my agent solely responded with “call me to discuss”. rolls eyes i think i’ll be going with another insurance agency for the horses specifically.
Try Markel Insurance (link posted in my prior post). You can deal directly with them vs going through agent. For up to 4 horses, liability policies are:

$230 for limits of $300k per occurrence/ $900k aggregate
$250 for $500k/$1.5M
$295 for $1M/$3M

That’s too much.

Why would you pay $350 for a $1 million liability policy that you could get for $80 (USEF membership + $25 for the policy underwritten by Lloyd’s of London)?
i think i figured out where the $600 quote came from - i told my agent a friend of mine rides my horses sometimes. i bet he quoted it more as a commercial policy than a private horse owner policy. sigh

thanks so much for the markel link!

I use Cheval for my horse owner’s liability insurance. My homeowner’s insurance used to cover them, and then stopped that coverage (without notifying anyone, I found out by accident, although I cant remember how). Prices range from $100 to $300 per year for up to 5 horses (I think) depending on the amount of coverage.

I would try Markel - they have a great policy for this, and I forget the exact cost for a single horse, but it was very inexpensive and well worth the peace of mind in my opinion. I haven’t seen it as a common requirement in boarding barns, but I suspect that’s more because of a lack of understanding than people not thinking it’s needed.

My barn also requires it. I’ve boarded there for about a year and a half now and it’s the first barn that has required it. I found USEF membership was the cheapest and easiest to get option.

Yes, that started in 2015. The cost is $25 for a $1 million liability policy.
I bought a 3 year membership back in 2012 (should take me through 2015), does anyone know if I still have the liability coverage? If not, I can call USEF. That’s the whole reason I bought the membership as I don’t show anymore.
