Liability Insurance to Keep Horse at Friends

long story short, a good friend has lost her horse and, due to her medical condition, she cannot have another. She kindly offered to let me keep my horse at her barn free of charge (i do care and perform all duties) so she can at least see and enjoy a horse on her property. She will not have any financial benefit from this.

As someone who does not own a home, I have previously carried a liability insurance when i kept a horse at my parents home. That was years ago though, and I cannot find the papers for the company I used. The company was a suggestion from a member here. Anyone give me some good insurance contacts?

In the past I used EMO equine insurance.

Talk to your insurance company to see if an umbrella policy would cover you if something happened to your friend as a result of your horse doing something.

I would be concerned that if she got hurt, not that she would sue you but that her health insurance company would go after you to pay for her healthcare. Yes, it happens. I often get mail from my health insurance company asking questions about why I had some procedure done to see if they can get someone else to pay… :frowning:

Thanks guys! definitely points to consider, Where’sMyWhite! I’m new to owning horses after a 5 year hiatus. It feels like a century though!

Depending on your state, equine liability coverage can be added to mortality coverage as an endorsement. If you have mortality coverage, check with your carrier.

Markel is a prominent name in equine insurance. (Haven’t used them, though- I have coverage as an umbrella on my homeowners’ ins. with State Farm)

Private horse owner’s insurance.
I’ve had excellent service and pricing from Cunningham & Cunningham in Harriman NY

I have Private Horse Owners Liability insurance through Corinthian. If something happens and my mare hurts someone, does damage to property, etc. I’m covered. Well worth the $150 annual fee.

Agreed. That’s the coverage you’d ask about – Personal Horse Owner’s Liability Insurance (sometimes called Private Horse Owner’s Liability Insurance). An Umbrella Liability Insurance Policy doesn’t replace it – just potentially adds more coverage to it. Can you add the property owner as an additional insured on the policy? Discuss it with your insurance agent.

Your friend may have to carry additional insurance as well.

Changing subject a bit…
One horse alone on the farm? Keeping a single horse can present it’s own unique challenges. (I didn’t it once myself) Perhaps I misunderstood the plan.

I keep my USEF membership inplace in order to be covered by their liability insurance. If you already have a policy, theirs kicks in after the primary policy stops covering the costs. If you do not have a policy, then by default the USEF policy becomes your policy. Total membership cost (non-compete) with insurance was $85 this year.
