Liability protection when trainer comes to you

I keep my horses at home and have started to take lessons with a local trainer that offers to come to me. This is a first for me and not sure what additional measures I need to take to protect myself in the event she gets injured. I have homeowners with umbrella coverage. I plan to post the inherent risk sign but not sure what other measures I need to take. There may be times she will ride my horse. Should I ask her to sign a liability release? Thanks.

Trainers need to have their own insurance, this situation is what it’s for. That said, I’m no expert just going by what I have seen in my life.
I would ask my insurance company and definitely have a waiver signed.

It should be covered on your farm insurance :slightly_smiling_face:
(Which you should have if you are keeping horses)

check with your homeowners provider, at least our provider considers privately owned horses as personal pets thus their actions are covered by the homeowners

this is cut from our policy

LIABILITY COVERAGES
d. Is caused by an animal owned by or in the care of any insured .

Here’s a post on my blog on this subject called “What to Consider Before an Equine Professional Does Business on Your Property.” Liability is a concern.

My thought experiment for this question: What do you do when you have a contractor come and repair your roof, which you know is a dangerous task? In that case, I ask them for proof of insurance, both liability in case they break a window, and workers comp for their employees.

How is this different from having someone come to your property to provide the service of horse training and riding instruction?

I would talk to a lawyer who is knowledgeable about the laws in your state. (I tried asking my home insurance company what was covered regarding the horses and they could not provide a clear answer beyond actually making a claim and seeing what happened. So now I have a separate horse owner’s liability policy. But that’s for if my horse injures a guest, or if they escape and cause a car accident, and because I have a horse boarded elsewhere.)

If you’re willing, let us know what you end up deciding!
