Line breeding/close bloodlines

I have a really nice old upper level eventing mare that just had her first foal (a lovely looking colt) and I’m deciding on a stallion to breed her to this year/next year. I was really interested in breeding her to Ramiro B as she’s an amazing jumper and if it doesn’t end up looking like an eventer it will likely be a nice show jumper. However, I just took a look at his pedigree and I’m a little concerned that they have several of the same lines. I know line breeding is very common for sport horses, but I’m not sure if there is a point that the inbreeding is too significant… Any opinions on whether this might be a bad idea?

I suggest you enter both pedigrees in Sport Horse Breed Database here:

and then generate a hypothetical foal. The foal’s pedigree will show the inbreeding in the first five generations, as well as the percentages of the horses involved. Then you could post that link.

The general rule on linebreeding/inbreeding is that if nothing is closer than the third generation, and the horses who are doubled have proved to be good producers without throwing bad genes in the their offspring, doubling (or tripling or more) isn’t a concern.

Thanks viney!

Seeing it laid out with numbers made me a little less worried about the similarities… And I did speak to a big breeder who wasn’t too worried about it as the stallions in common tended to pass on good traits… She liked the double Wendekreis particularly.

I personally think that is a nice pedigree and uses line breeding well. It’s always better to have the doubles on both the top and the bottom. You also have the full brothers Caletto 1 and Caletto II, which increases the influence of Cor de la Bryere and Dekka.

And, I have to point out that Wendekreis’s damsire is Waidmannsdank whose dam comes from the German TB mare line from Waldrun. The Waldrun mares have produced wonderfully in sport through their sons.
