Line Quirks and Stallion Suggestions

Hi I’m on new account since it’s been a long time since posting and I can’t remember my log in. I have two related questions.

  1. I have a 4 year old mare currently on a break to have a foal. It seemed her head was a bit fried and she was mentally immature when it came to being ridden. She would be very good and then out of the blue have a complete meltdown that came out as rearing. On the ground she is a complete sweetheart. She had all the checks and did have tooth pain which may have started the issue and became a habit. She is highly sensitive when ridden and brave jumping. She was always good when she jumped and also with another horse …no problems. So we decided to put her out for a year to mature, be a horse, and have a foal.

She was breed to a son of Heartbreaker known for his very good mind and rideability. This horse was chosen for her by an very experienced breeder as I’m new to this

Anyway my first question is I would like know to know and Quirks issues, with the horses in her line, so when she is ready to try again I can take a unique approach as I think is what she’ll need.

2._my second question is for stallion suggestions if I were to just keep, her as a brood mare. It would have to be a horse with a very good mind. Things she needs improvement on: she needs some height as she’s only 15.3. She is also a bit to long so shortening of back is also important. She has excellent movement and is very pretty. She jumps very well and cat like but could use more power.

Her breeding…
She is out of an elite SF mare only ever used as a broodmare. Her dam is by Equest Carnute and out of a mare by Qualisco who is by Jalisco B.

Her sire died very young and was never officially registered. He was a grandson of cavalier royale out of a Cruising mare.

Thanks!

If your priorities are temperament and height you might consider breeding to Holsteiner stallion Lotus T. He has sired excellent foals out of both SF and Irish mares, he is extremely pre-potent, will also give jumping ability and movement without compromising the modern type. You can check him out on FB at “Holsteiner Stallion Lotus T” as well as the group “Lotus T offspring”.

I would be inclined to try and find out if she can be a trusted horse u/s. Maybe try her in a bitless bridle to start with and use a trainer who is positive and gentle but firm and has experience – maybe a Buck Brannaman student. I would thoroughly check her for ulcers – since your description sounds like a horse that might be suffering from that – chiro, full vet workup and testing. Even with a great pedigree and some good qualities, I would hesitate to breed a mare that has temperment and work ethic issues that cannot be resolved. These things are the foundation of what they are bred to do. Most of your market is female amateur and they don’t want to deal with a headcase. Since she is in foal, you can at least have a foal to evaluate what she can produce. Good luck!

Cruising was notoriously peculiar. Might have come from the sire’s dam.

Thanks Penny. She’s had lots of checks not full vet workup yet but the vet did look at her. I am a physio and got another physio to look at her too. She gets a little tight in her back and pole but nothing that should cause her reaction and she’s had regular treatment. I had a very good, soft, quiet rider that has lots of experience with young horses that have issues working with her. He really liked her bar this one very bad issue. She was going out for a long break and then we’ll try her again. He suggested, like you, no bit and to start her with just a rope halter and go very slow and gentle like you suggested and that is what we’ll try. I don’t know if there are any Buck Brannaman students here…I’m in Ireland, though I’m familiar with him and his methods. I’m also going to start her with French blinkers.

I had initially thought it was her teeth as we had to wait a while to get the good dentist out .she was fine until one day she just started. The dentist had to take her wolf teeth out which were impacted and she had a very strong pain reaction and needed a lot of sedation. So I thought she got into the habit from pain that was there.

I also thought ulcers because she got a bit girthy when she hadn’t been. Though physically she looked excellent and not ulcery. I treated for ulcers but couldn’t use the combo that covers hind gut because the pharmacy had trouble getting it and it took weeks. She started going very well with the one med but then she started acting out again so when she comes back I will do the full treatment.

Another note is that she never did anything wrong when following another horse. I took her out hacking with a older horse that is very quiet and good on the roads. She never even did a spook, just a look here and there but better than a lot of green horses. She was excellent with cars passing, road signs, traffic cones, crazy dogs, sheep and cattle. None of it phased her and we even took her through open country side and up a mountain. This made me think she was just mentally immature and needed a break before starting again.

The foal is to see what she produces with a good stallion. It is a risk. I don’t mind if she doesn’t become an ammy ride I’m happy to keep her as she quite good when she’s good. But obviously she still needs to be rideable and not dangerous.

I appreciate all your good thoughts and will definitely take them all on board.

Yeah. Cruising I know for sure produced some head cases. It’s the others I’m not well versed on any quirks etc. Thanks!

Thanks he looks nice and seems to be lots of good things said about his offspring. I’m in Ireland though so a European based stallion would be a better option I think…but I’ll put him on my list
