Lip Tattoo Help

Hi guys. I know almost nothing about lip tattoos so I am hoping you can help me help by suggesting resources to a ID a gelding my friend bought. She was told by the previous owner he’s an Appendix and is 18 years old, and was given no papers. Her equine dentist thinks he’s closer to 30. He does have a lip tattoo that that she thinks reads P706J followed by an unreadable number. Now from what I’ve researched this does not match an AQHA tattoo, but is close to a Jockey Club tattoo minus that “J,” and that if he is registered Jockey Club he’d be 27. Is there another agency that I’m unaware of that an Appendix could be tattooed/registered with?

Thanks for any help or suggestions you can provide. This boy is well-loved but she’s just curious about his history and whether he’s really 18 or 30ish.

A tattoo is a letter followed by 5 numbers. So it can’t be a J at the end. Wow, that is a pretty old horse!

The first letter denotes the year of birth, example: a horse with the letter K was born in 2007, a horse with the letter L was born in 2008.

I think this IS a P year, so the horse is probably 26 years old!

Can you post pictures of the tattoo and the horse (showing markings)

If the horse is actually that old, the info may need to be submitted to JC anyway. The search only goes back so far.

Go to the FB group in my signature and post clear photos of his tattoo along with full body photos and face photo showing his markings. There hasn’t been a tattoo they haven’t been able to figure out yet!

Thanks guys. I’ll ask if she minds sending me photos of the horse.

P fits exactly for an 18yo Standardbred.

Here is some information for a Standardbred that MIGHT match. Tattoo P7061

Thanks Christa, I really appreciate you trying but that’s definitely not him…he is a chestnut, and he has a blaze. I am also fairly certain he is not a Standardbred, but I could be wrong.

Thanks again

It is also unlikely that the first number is a 7, since the foal crop doesn’t get that big. It is probably a number 0-5. Photos would be a massive help.
