Lipizzan stallions

Anyone know if there are Lipizzan stallions standing publicly at this time? Any oldies with fei records or youngsters with upcoming talent?

I remember a time when they had a solid presence in the dressage arena. Are they still being bred, trained? Will we see more of them in the show arena in the coming years.

Looks like there are some listed here, but not too many out there, it seems, from a quick google search. Maybe some frozen options from Europe?

That link is extremely out of date. Try uslipizzan.org and the breeders page.

Top FEI stallion in the Country right now is GP horse Pluto VI Andorella. He’s with Amanda Johnson in Wisconsin. Another strong sire widely used is Pluto Virtuosa in NY. He’s shown to Fourth Level in Welligton and was formerly in the White Stallions touring show which displayed FEI movements.

Tempel Farms stands multiple stallions. Some also perform at the GP level in the summer shows but they don’t compete at USDF dressage shows.

I’m on my phone at a show all weekend so it’s hard to write much more. That’s a place to start. I’ll try to add more suggestions when I get back to a laptop.

Some more info:

Conversano Mima in the PNW (Goldendale, WA) went to GP last year and earned an amateur rider her Gold medal. He’s still available for breeding but his owner, June Boardman of White Horse Vale is cutting back on horses and breeding. She has taken down her website but he’s got many nice and very even tempered offspring on the ground.

Kathleen Donnelly of Touchstone Acres in West Virginia has been breeding Lipizzans for many years, although I do not think she currently has a stallion competing at FEI. She may be of help if especially if you’re in her area. http://www.touchstoneacres.com

Sarah Casey of Waltzing horse farm in NY may have stallions trained to FEI. http://www.waltzinghorsedressage.com/sarahcasey/

One of the considerations with the breed and recognized dressage showing, is that there are more Lipizzans out there that are utilized for classical riding “at home” and in clinics and training, than are shown in USDF/USEF competition. It’s just the nature of the kind of owner that the horses frequently appeal to.

Of course without some measure (as in show record) of what a sire has done or can do under saddle, it’s hard for a mare owner or prospective buyer to assess the stallion’s true level, in the terms that dressage enthusiasts are accustomed to.

THere’s also Emily at Tempus Renatus Farm in NC. http://www.tempusrenatus.com
I don’t know what level her Lip stallion has been ridden to, either, but if you’re in that part of the country she could be a good contact.

Another breeder to contact from anywhere in the US is Kate Phillips of Mississippi View Farm in Minnesota. http://www.missviewfarm.com . Again, I am not sure whether her sires have competed at FEI levels. Some may be capable. She’s breeding more mares than probably any other Lip breeder these days, and she knows her lines very well. She is a dressage judge and trainer and she believes (as do I) that Lipizzans are competitive in the present-day dressage show world and that it’s unfortunate that there are not more in the show ring.

Kate is newer to the breed and has picked up some stock from June Boardman and other PNW breeders who’ve scaled back. Kate works with a lot of amateur riders and temperament is really important in her breeding program.

But really-- the first horse I mentioned, Pluto VI Andorella, is the top performing Grand-Prix level Lipizzan competing today. He is technically long listed for the Olympics, although (as most here know) that’s a very long list. And he’s nowhere near the top of it.

Still, he’s the only Lipizzan with that distinction in a very long time, and is the only US Lipizzan who’s been shown in CDIs in a long time, and these are quantifiable accomplishments. He came out of Tempel Farms, as well.

Hope this helpsl.

Kate’s stallions have not yet shown FEI, but F. Canada is showing Third level with an AA and he just keeps getting better. He will likely be ready for PSG next year. She lacks time to show N. Wandosa but he’s working Third level. She also has several AA’s showing mares and a couple geldings, all are doing fabulous. Come to our shows in the Midwest and you’ll witness the Lip domination that’s occurring!
