Littleton Equine Medical buys Colorado Horse Park

This was just announced on LEG’s social media. Dr. Kelly Tisher says, “Over the next few years, our plan is to create a world class equine clinic at the horse park as well as continuing to improve and expand the horse show facility.”

Great news for the Colorado horse community, who has long feared that the park would be closed and sold to developers. Is this the first model of its kind? Has anyone ever heard of a vet practice buying a show grounds? Very interesting.

That’s good news. I hope they will create a successful business model.

I hope this is good news. Seems like it will be better than many alternatives.

I’m also glad the property won’t be developed into housing (I used to ride with a trainer there when it was still High Prairie), but the idea of a vet practice having the financial resources to buy this facility blows me away. I feel sorry for the clients (and I used to be one of them back in the day) because there’s no way this cost won’t be passed on to horse owners. Get ready for those vet bills to skyrocket!

We are such a funny group.

Oh no, a horse facility is going to close, that can’t happen.

A vet buys the horse facility so it can continue to be a horse facility and
Oh no, that is horrible, those poor clients are going to get over charged.

Maybe this vet invested well, maybe this vet is a great business operator and finds ways to offer great things at a reasonable price.

Be happy that the area is getting an expanded vet practice and a place to do horse stuff.

I googled their clinic, it’s massive, 24 equine vets, no wonder there is a shortage everywhere else. Sounds like they have a very extensive practice as it is. While I do think it’s a bit of an odd mix to have a vet hospital and a show grounds together, I’d be happy to have it where I live, or just a couple of the vets.

This sounds great, I imagine it like having Hagyard right next to the Kentucky Horse Park.

Hopefully they’ve got a good business plan for the horse park on top of a successful vet practice, and everybody wins.

I’m happy that they bought it but I wasn’t surprised either. The one time I went there I was flabbergasted at the prices compared to CSU hospital. Like double the price of what I was expecting compared to CSU.

That being said they treated us well and it got us answers quickly. I do know the final call rested on the same radiologist that CSU uses. But again I didn’t regret going there. That being said I would hesitant to go again unless needed because of the much higher prices though. That was only one time thing so maybe everything else was not so expensive.

Anyways I’m still happy that they bought it and that it isn’t getting developed!!

I feel like Colorado is blessed at least in the Front Range, with tons of Equine vets. I can think of 7 different practices in my area alone- 45 minutes from Littleton! And then we have CSU as well.

Doesn’t the property have water and/or sewer issues that prevent development? I haven’t been in a long time but a fun place to show and lovely facility.

I’m guessing Littleton will move into the top permanent barns and use that as their big clinic. Their land is Littleton has to be worth a ton.

Not this group. Resonable prices are not their goal.

Me too! I rode with John McConnell back in the early 2000’s. You?

Lion’s Gate. Really liked it but had to move when I had surgery and wouldn’t be able to ride for half a year.

I attended a lot of events at what was then High Prairie and then became Colorado Horse Park. I am so glad it will remain a horse park.

I’ve also paid huge vet bills to Littleton Equine. Don’t get me wrong, I was grateful for the emergency visit when my Hackney pony had a seizure and my regular vet was out of town. I also used their equine dentist for a while, and that was $$$ too. But it’s not like I wasn’t forewarned about them being expensive, and the couple of times I absolutely needed them, I was happy they were there and willing to come out.

The buyer of the very large adjacent lot recently gained approval from the City of Littleton for a big multi-use development project. There’s a commuter train station a little over a mile away from the clinic. So yeah, they can certainly sell the current property for a s(tuff)-ton of money to a developer. I’ve been a Littleton client for over 20 years. Yes, they charge more than CSU, but they’re well-staffed and for anybody south of metro Denver, they’re local. CSU is absolutely fantastic but is also an hour and a half away. All in all, this is great news for the local horse community!

I heard that they also want to move away from the current location, which has become a bit too urban to accommodate their practice. I mean, trying to get a trailer in our out onto the motor speedway that is Santa Fe Drive is hair-raising. (Anyone else still think of them as “Littleton Large”, from when they were still an all encompassing large-animal practice?) I checked out their website and all the photos are taken “away” from the highway.

FWIW, I’m really glad they got the Horse Park, even though it moves that much farther away from central metro.

Absolutely! That’s who they were the last time I wrote them a check.
