Live Racing

I am really enjoying watching racing from Oak Lawn and Gulfstream.
I wish NBCSN and NBC would cover the Kentucky Derby and other BN races the way they are covering these today. No hats, no food, no fashion, no celebrities other than the horses and horse people. Just bring them out, load them in, and let them go. Just horses racing on a Friday and Saturday afternoon.
I also like that some of the presenters are women!

FWIW, the coverage you’re seeing on NBCSN is actually all TVG in partnership with NBCSN (TVG is providing the feed, NBC is just passing it along). All the race analysts are TVG personnel. This is the way TVG covers races  (and why I’ll watch TVG all day until the horses are in the post parade for those races whose live coverage belongs solely to NBC*).

Typically, during TVG’s coverage of races, they’ll get into ‘Every Race Every Day’ mode and yes, just about every race. For those limited number of races like the KD because of the exclusive rights to live broadcast of that race by NBC, TVG will talk through the race and shortly after the horses cross the wire, they’ll show the race delayed.

Both NBCSN and FoxSports have had to make alternate air arrangements since there are so few tracks running ATM (heck, few live sporting events of any kind). FoxSports is, IIRC, in partnership with NYRA while NBCSN has the partnership with TVG. When live racing at most tracks starts up again, expect to see what you usually see on NBCSN… may just sans hats, fashion, celebs until spectators are allowed again at the tracks.

PS. the ladies you would have seen today on TVG, they are, as TVG says… Born Into The Sport. Christina Blacker’s husband is trainer Dan Blacker who is based out of Santa Anita. Brittney Eurton’s dad is trainer Peter Eurton who, among others, trains Storm The Court (you can see the saddle cloth framed behind Brittney) and Ashleyluvssugar. Caton Bredar’s husband Dave is a jockey agent for Florent Geroux. Gabby Gaudet’s husband is trainer Norm Casse.

A late PS on NBC*. In their defense, in more ‘normal’ times in the past, they carried the races from a single track like Churchill Downs. Gotta fill that airtime between races with something. Normally, as best as I can tell, it’s usually 25 minutes or so between post times until the lead-in for a big race like the KD… then it can be an hour between the race before the Derby and the Derby post time. Gotta fill that airtime with something.

TVG on the other hand, racing is all they do, albeit many different types of horse racing. They can bounce from track to track to track in their daily coverage. During the summer months, they may have live analysts as multiple tracks. And yes, on Derby day, you may easily see the lady analysts wearing their hats, just not a lot of airtime they have to fill

When Scott Hazelton goes to the Royal Ascot meet, he is wearing appropriate men’s wear including the top hat  (which, depending on where at Royal Ascot he’s going, he must wear).

Couldn’t find a good place to put this but a cute share.

Just a few minutes ago, Race 11 at Gulfstream Park, a Maiden Claiming race, had a horse, Jack Beanstalk, who is trying by Norm Casse, Gabby Gaudet’s husband. The camera was on her (not during the live race run) as the horses were coming down the stretch… she was shouting at her live coverage for Jack to get up. You could see the disappointment in her face as Jack finished 3rd by a few short inches.
