I have decided to switch my two horses onto a ration balancer, and have narrowed it down to either LMF Super Supplement G or Triple Crown 30%. I compared the labels and Triple Crown seems to have more of every single vitamin or mineral listed, as well as more fiber and protein. However, it is more expensive and I’m not quite sure if my horses really need it.
I have a 14 year old and a 20 year old, both active and ridden around 5 times a week. They get 8-10 hours turnout per day on an acre of lush, tall green grass that is well-cared for. They both are easy keepers and are maintaining weight (if not overweight!) on this diet. They get 1-2lbs of LMF Senior now, but obviously that is way less than the recommended amount for them.
Suggestions, opinions, experiences? I would also be feeding additional glucosamine, msm, and biotin supplements for their specific needs.
No experience with the LMF, but my horse (who can be a bit picky) finds the TC 30% very palatable and he’s doing great on it. Sorry I can’t comment on a direct comparison.
Another thought - I have not found a need for a hoof supplement since starting a ration balancer years ago. That includes 1 TB cross with typical thin TB feet and another horse with 4 white feet. You might find after several months on the RB that you can cut out the biotin.
What hay are they eating the other 14-16 hours of the day? That might be the deciding factor.
If that doesn’t help sway you either way, then just pick the one you can get easily and economically and the horses like, and see how it works. Both are good products.
I use LMF and TC feeds for my herd. The TC is TCSr for my older horse who needs to gain weight. The LMF Stage One is my LMF product, used because I have a couple of horses who are IR to one degree or another, plus the feed contains selenium, which is in iffy supply in our soils.
The LMF I feed is less expensive by about $10 per 50lb sack compared to the TCSr.
Of all the feeds available in my particular area, I think these are the best I can use–I’m assuming that the quality would be high throughout the lines.
