Locs and helmet fit

Hairstyle gurus’ advice needed!

One of my sweet little lesson kids is an 8yo African-American girl with thick locs. While her hairstyle looks lovely, it’s affecting the fit of her helmet.
I typically recommend braids/plaits and/or hairnets to keep their hair tied up/neat/out of their face, but her hair is too short for braids and the few hairnets her Mom bought didn’t work (as in the helmet was sitting on top of the bunched up locs on top of her head). She’s already wearing a XL helmet - and I am unsure of the best way to ensure proper fit (short of recommending to cut said locs - and the kid and her Mom seem quite attached to the locs as an expression of their ethnicity).
I suggested a bandana as a layer between the locs and the helmet but it was apparently pulling on her hair and made her very uncomfortable. I am a bit at a loss as, while I have decently long thick curly hair myself, its texture is easy to flatten/squish down into a bun/hairnet - which isn’t the case for my student’s hair.

Do any of you have experience with this? How can we make her lovely locs and proper fitting helmet wearing compatible?

Ooh that is tough, yeah locs don’t squish down like curls do. There’s a Facebook page called Young Black Equestrians The Podcast, you might want to post there and ask for suggestions?

Have you tried removing the padding from the helmet? All that hair should be provide sufficient padding itself for comfort.

Great idea about the padding! And thank you for the F-book recommendation. I’ll go and have a look right now!
