Long Beach/Huntington Beach, CA Adult Amatuer Jumper Barn and Trainer Recommendations

We will be relocating to the Long Beach area this October from the DC/NOVA area. I am looking for good adult ammie jumper barn recommendations. I want to stay within 30 min of the Long Beach area with traffic (and yes, I know traffic is bad in the Long Beach area…I’ve been a NOVA road warrior for years). Care is the highest concern, good footing and facilities are second, and last are full training options/full show schedule.

Preferably, I would like a great boarding option with lessons. I don’t need full training as I have managed horses’ programs for years and prefer it that way. A great barn that will allow me to train with the trainer on a weekly basis while also showing with the stable would be ideal. I’ll be bringing two–my competing jumper and his BFFL, my 22 year old pony who still packs around like a 12 year old!

Please give me any advice or recommendations you all may know!!

I ride at First Field Farm in Cerritos, which is just north of Long Beach, just SW of the 91-605 freeway interchange. A friend who works in Signal Hill says that it takes her 20 minutes from work at the end of the day on surface streets.

Clients are mostly amateurs and a mix of equitation, jumper, and hunter riders. Shows range from higher-end A shows (Oaks, Thermal, Showpark) to LA County Level (that are also USEF rated). Super nice group of people. Great horse care. Lessons that keep you interested and learning (and I have been doing this for a long time).

Trainers have been doing this a long time and approach things in a logical and old-fashioned way, looking out for the welfare of the horse.

Trainers are located within a large boarding facility with a ton of large (for So Cal) paddocks that might work for the pony. They go for $285 including feed, but you would have to hire someone to clean daily.

Feel free to PM me for more information.

Other options in the area include Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center with several trainers, Sandi Mercer at Lakewood Equestrian Center, and Rancho Rio Verde. Anything further north, south, or east will be more than 30 minutes.

Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center has some trainers who would be a good choice for you. The weather is great and the maintenance of the rings is really good in regards to footing. If you stop by on a Saturday morning you can watch all of them teach and get a feel if their training methods would be a good fit for you. Here is the website for the facility. http://www.hcpec.com.

+1 recommendation for First Field Farm in Cerritos. Super close to Long Beach, great trainers and program. Sadly, no trails or pastures, but you’re unlikely to find any of that even remotely close to Long Beach.

(I just moved back to DC…any suggestions there for a place to ride? I have a young jumper mare that needs someone experienced with young horses.)
