Long Haired Cats - update she's home!

Same! Always fun when you call the vet to get an appointment for Scooby and they go “ok but for real, who is it for?” and you have to run backwards through the names to remember they know him as Montana Bob

Way late to the party here! 9 years ago, we adopted what appears to be a purebred Turkish Van. The rural county shelter where we lived got an inordinate number of exotic purebred feline intakes. It was whispered that there were unethical breeders dumping their non-show quality kitties out in the country.

Unfortunately, I believe the rumors were likely true because I’d never even seen a Turkish Van anywhere except in pictures until boy. He stuck his paw through the cage and gently tapped my youngest on the shoulder. “He has a medicine hat. He’s chosen us!” my daughters solemnly informed me. The shelter staff knew us because we’d often come sit in the cat room. They told me that he’d been there for a while because people didn’t want to have to take on the task of grooming his long fur.

He’s the coolest cat ever. Classic “Van” temperament. He’s well worth all the trouble and more. But ,omg, the floof is next level! Even compared to that of our other long-haired kitty. Vans have a different coat composition than most other cat breeds. Reminds me a lot of rabbit angora; drifting up into your face when you brush him and killing every clipper I’ve ever tried on it. His coat defies all logic. It isn’t even that long during the warmer months. Yet I started playing around and actually managed to pull yarn out of the shed I got off him the other day! And because he’s my wild child failed barn kitty conversion, he loves nothing more than to trapse through the fields, coming home matted with burrs and foxtail seeds. :scream: :scream:

Unfortunately, he did not receive good brush training as a kitten. I would make that priority #1 with any long-coated kitten. Richie the Maine Coon’s IG page is good for ideas as his mom posts lots of brushing videos. Enjoy the new kitty!

I had to Google that breed. They’re gorgeous! How you described his coat is how I would describe hers. It’s a different texture. Hope I’m not allergic as I’ll just have to suffer through it. It seems like her hair will permeate your clothes, rather than just lay on it, if that makes sense. She’s great about showing you her belly, so hopefully that’ll make brushing it easier :joy:

Kitten coats are notoriously Angora like, so expect that it could change. And at least MCC coats take a long time to develop, at least 2 years and really 4 for it to become just so. much. hair. I’m in the honeymoon phase with Zevon, the kitten hair is gone, the old kitten undercoat is gone, there new undercoat(s) hasn’t come in yet and the top coat doesn’t have a lot of length just yet. It’s the easiest grooming to date, but I know when that winter coat comes in at about 18 months it’s going to be floof city going forward.:rofl:

I never gave any thought to her having a kitten coat verses an adult coat :astonished:

I’m over my head! I had to Google DLH! Perhaps I’ll find a groomer, just as a back up. Then I can write a book, “Long Haired Cats For Dummies.”

I’ll try ny best to not make her fugly!

She’s adorable!!! Start now with short sessions just giving her a quick brush and follow by a reward so the thinks its great.

I had a long haired boy with the most beautiful dark red orange coat. He hated being brushed with a passion sadly. He had very thin skin and was constantly getting the undercoat all matted up. I had to brush him every day in chunks while he huffed at me. Crazy cat…I surely do miss him.

Also in your grooming armory get a wide tooth comb with long teeth. That you can run over them quickly and if there are mats or lumps then not only do you know where they are but the long teeth are helpful for gently detangling.

My cat Baler usually goes by Little Farty Buttpants. Talk about downhill…lol

I think cats and thoroughbreds are pretty similar. Start small, maybe even with a toothbrush.

I don’t know that kitten coat is an official thing but short or long hair, they all have a different coat when they are wee ones!

It’s floofy, but it’s not dense or waterproof

Never mind snow, he can stay out in rain on his catio until his outer coat is sopping wet, then apparently it’s time to come snuggle with me in bed. It’s one of the less adorable aspects of MCC+catio ownership

Went to see her this week! She was great for a little bit of brushing with the love glove. Then, I took it off & she attacked it LOL. I guess I’ll keep it hidden & brush her when she’s being fed, to start.

I’m rethinking her name of Edie. Not sure she looks like, might be Cutie Patootie Fluffy Butt

John Coltrane is 1/2 Maine Coon. When he was a kitten his fur looked like dreadlocks. People thought I didn’t brush him, which I did quite often. I thought he was going to be high maintenance in the fur department. It turned out that he rarely needs to be brushed and looks gorgeous.

That cute face!

Update - I still don’t have her b/c she can’t be spayed until she’s 3 lb. She’s 2 lb 10 Oz & spay is scheduled 8/16…fingers crossed. She was gaining steadily & then had a week & a half when she plateued. She was with 9 other rescues & although food was abundant, I think there was too much activity for her. She’s now the 5th kitten & gaining weight again. She’s going to be dewormed again with Drontol & hopefully that helps.

I went to see her today & I’m head over heels smitten! Check out the ear hair & toe hair! I’m obsessed! Does the toe hair need to he trimmed for the litter box? At least it’s white, so I can see if it’s dirty.

Foster Mom recommended this tool. Anyone use it? It’s $75, so I’d like another good review before I purchase.

She is beautiful! I would be smitten too. I hope she gets to come home soon! I have never trimmed toe hair on my fluffy cats.

Gorgeous!! She’s getting close to the magic weight. Hopefully she’ll be home soon!

I’ve never trimmed toe hair. If they get something stuck I just pull it off.

I can’t imagine spending that much on a brush, and have never seen it. I’d probably wait and see what she likes. I use a skip tooth comb for shedding and most of mine love it.

Slicker brushes are good too. I’d buy several and see what she prefers.

She’s adorable!

That looks like a fancy double sided slicker brush, so it’s not something I’d buy and for sure IF I was using a slicker bush I’d start with a cheaper one first.

Never trimmed peet floof yet, although the struggle to SEE white claws in white peet floof is real

SO freaking adorable!!

Our LHs have toe hair too but we never trim it. I would only consider trimming if it was a strictly indoor cat AND the hair was making movement on slick floors hard. Ours are regularly cleaning their feet anyway, and even though they spend most of most daylight hours outside, there’s never anything stuck in the hair.

No longhairs here, but a friend has one & has him shaved every Summer. Mostly because he’s lax grooming his butt & can get messy there :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
Similar to a Persian Lion Cut, so he keeps “legwarmers” & neck up is left long.

Little WhateverYouNameHer is so sweet!
That face! :heart_eyes_cat:
