Long Hairs growing after bald patches

Has anyone seen this?
Horse purchased and possibly a bit nutritionally deficient, given a better diet, horse is in very good weight, shiny, in work, 11years old.
Had some hair fall out after clipping in winter, hair grew back nice and healthy in the patches. Now the hairs are those long fluffy faded colour hairs, but only in the patches.
The rest of the coat is summer coat. If they are clipped they come back in 3 weeks. (Its middle of summer here)

Looks very different to the cushings one, so not thinking that.

Any ideas?

A few things come to mind…

Horses will sometimes get those long, dry hairs when they’re wormy. How’s his deworming history?

They’ll also sometimes show them when the Cu/Zn/Fe balance is out of whack. That’s a really common problem here in the US because we’re so iron rich, but not sure how much you guys see of it. Do you have a hay test?

I also have a mare with consistent long hairs on her wither. It’s due to a pressure sore there from her days on the track. Are these patches where he had an injury to the skin at some point?

I kept meaning to update this
the nutritional aspect has been as far as best guess, taken care of. The horse has been with the owner a year odd now, so this should be healthy coat.
The mineral mix is one specifically balanced for here, with levels of copper and zinc.
Ive got a picture but it wont upload it, says invalid file. I will keep trying

It almost looks like those patches are winter coat and stand out against her summer coat. Is it possible that she might have had a mild case of ring worm that caused the hair to fall out last winter? Because I have seen hair grow back oddly on a horse that had it - then it looked fine after they shed out again. But not sure if ring worm is a thing where you are (or the fungus may be called something different down under!).

That really strikes me as the haircoat weirdness seen in wormy horses.

Its really weird hey.
its been to see the vet and they drenched and are testings for cushings.
