probably in late May or early June. will be a yearling by June. will need a box stall. Please share your suggestions on great haulers for her! this will be 3,945 miles. eek!
we have gotten two weanlings from North Dakota to Fort Worth, it is a 1200 mile trip, each trip took two days with an overnight rest break to allow the young horse a period of rest.
Even so, they were quick to a nap when unloaded at the destination
we had cameras in the trailers to watch, each weanling was most interested in the trips watching the countryside go by.
Both turned in to excellent haulers, walk right into a trailer ready for the adventure
Your 4,000 mile trip will be interesting but doable. I suspect the trip may be longer as the route used may be to transfer points unless you are able to find at reasonable rate a direct shipment
I might put an AirTag on the filly’s halter as long as it could be placed in a way that would be out of the way
What is an air tag?
tracking device, really have no idea if it would work but at least I try one , the cost in nominal. I read of these being put on all sorts of stuff
As you are selecting a transport company cheap may not be best given the horse’s age. This will be a learning process that if its bad you will have a lifetime of problems to deal.
We made these early trips with the youngsters as enjoyable as possible, neither have had any second thoughts about jumping back into a trailer even though one was only four and half months old when he was brought down from North Dakota (he went directly to large Class A show, nothing phased him) He handled that trip better than some of older rescue horses who have been well treated here but we do not know their history, they question everything. He is now about the same age as your filly, he is the most confident horse I have had.
You could also look here for information on reputable carriers who run that route.

Noticed they have a member in Alberta, Foothills Horse Transportation. Don’t know anything about them but it would be a place to start.
I’ve brought 2 youngsters from the Toronto area down to central Texas. The first one I brought down using a smaller shipping company- she had a box stall but the trailer wasn’t an air ride. She came off pretty unphased and looking happy. The 2nd one, I brought down using two large shipping companies that utilized air ride rigs (one to cross the border and then one that traveled my direction). I thought this would be a better experience, but this one came off the trailer wild-eyed and much skinnier than when she left Canada. Both had 2-3 day layovers in between crossing the border and transferring to the shipping rig that would bring them down to Texas.
Looking back, the smaller shipper with the less fancy equipment took more time and care to check on the one they were hauling and in turn, the horse had a much better experience. The large shipping company took more stops on the way to us and the driver did their job and what was required, but didn’t go above and beyond to ensure the youngster was comfortable. If I was to do it again, I would look for a smaller, reputable operation over a large one for a youngster.
thanks so much!
