Long(ish) Term Tack Storage?

I just sent my horse out on lease and I now have 2 saddles that don’t fit any of my remaining horses and quite a few extra bridles!

I have plenty of room in my basement to keep the extra tack until I need it. Are there any tips for storing everything to keep it all in good condition until the horse returns from his lease or I bring in another project horse that fits that tack?

Clean them, and then keep them in a room which is around 70 to 75 degrees and where the humidity range stays between 35 and 70 percent. Buy an inexpensive humidity meter to make sure that your basement is in that range. Allow for air flow.

I have had 12 saddles stored in my tack room for nine years now. It stays in that temperature and humidity range, and has a tightly sealed door so dust is not a problem. I do not use any saddle covers so that I can easily keep an eye on them. A few of these saddles spent years at boarding barns where they would frequently grow films of mildew almost overnight. In the controlled environment in my own tack room I have experienced no mildew at all.

I would clean your tack and finish with this stuff. It really does help repel the mold/mildew.

Oakwood conditioner with tea tree oil also really does help with mildew too.
