Just curious. Watching taller ULR XC and SJ some look like their saddles are a tad short. Are they sacrificing rider fit and saddle length for the comfort of a shorter back horse? Not banging into the horses kidneys. Or just hiking their stirrups up?
I’ve just gone through this. The tree on the saddle was too long and was making the horses back sore. So th saddle is being remade with a shorter tree.
Speaking from experience here, there is only so much length they can give you on a saddle when you have a really long thigh. They can do upswept panels but that only brings down the length 1/2 size. Before custom saddles became the norm, I used to walk into a saddle shop for a new saddle and was told multiple times they couldn’t fit me. My saddle feels fine to me but if I hike my stirrups up it looks like my knee is hanging over the flap. If I did upper level eventing with a lot of drops and such I imagine I would be near the back of the cantle a lot. When you are 6’ (or taller) and mostly leg, there is only so much you can do.
I’m 6’2", so speaking from a bit of experience, even though my jump saddle is a double forward flap, it’s still not as much flap as would be ideal. I just don’t think it’s possible, and then yes, you come to the problem of the saddle being too long for short backed horses.
