Long term boarding

My wife has had major surgery and has an extended recovery time. I have two labs that are being boarded at my vet’s kennel during this time. They get a daily playtime with other dogs.

Has anyone had experience with extended boarding time? What problems come up? We miss our dogs but have zero time to care for them right now.

I have. I boarded for 2 months when traveling but it was at a farm vs vet kennel.

I’d try to find a boarding spot with a more home life feel vs long term at a vet. Not knocking the vet boarding, it’s just a little of cage life.

If you have dog-loving friends, hit them up, with a monthly/weekly/whatever payment offer, of course. You may be surprised that it’s not that hard to find a much more suitable situation for a lot less money.

If you can’t think of anyone off the top of your head, ask your dog-owning friends to network for you. Even approach shelters if that fails - they may know of someone who regularly fosters for them who may like a little cash for ‘fostering’ as long as you need your dogs taken care of for you.

Good luck and I hope the recovery goes well.

Is it possible to keep them at home?

I was bedridden for 6 months after my ankle was reconstructed. Due to the hardware, I was non-weightbearing. My dog at the time was 10 months old. It was amazing how he was able to adjust his schedule and be so quiet and calm while I was on crutches. I was by myself during the day and had to let him out every few hours.

Do they have to be boarded?

Do you actually need them out of the house, or do you just need someone else to care for them? Why not just hire a pet sitter to come 3x/day to do all the care? That will probably cost about the same as boarding two at the vet. You could even have them come in the morning to take them to a doggy day care and then bring them home at the end of the day.

If you need them out of the house, then I agree with finding a more in home style long term boarding situation because boarding at the vet and being in a cage long term sucks.
