Long Winter Coats (Coaches/Trainers Coats)

Hey guys! In the interest of not freezing this winter I have decided that I would like to be able to wear a knee length coat riding; my current knee-length one is wonderful but does not have flaps/straps for me to ride in it, so I have to wear a hip length parka when I am actually on a horse. I have heard these called coaches/trainers coats, although frankly everyone, pro ammie or junior wears them around here because it gets so darn cold.

Here are a couple I have seen but am not thrilled with (the ELT one is the best match):

I want the flap/strap combo to cover my legs and keep it in place on a horse, and knee length. Oh, and down/down alternative, and belted. Recommend me what you wear in this catagory besides the above two which seem to be super popular?

Are you going to be riding outdoors? I typically wear a longer coat to the barn and while tacking/warming up, but I then take it off for the actual ride. That’s in an indoor arena, though. Our ground usually freezes to the point where riding outdoors is difficult in the winter. I’m interested to hear what others recommend.

I have the ELT jacket and I love it. I taught and rode in it all last winter and for the first time was not completely miserable. I’m in NJ so it doesn’t really get insanely cold but the humidity can make it much worse, plus I have no meat on my bones. I previously would have to wear 3 layers of pants and that still wouldn’t keep my legs warm.

I don’t recall ever using the leg loops (actually didn’t even realize it has them lol) and that jacket stayed in place at all times. It seems to be very breathable especially with the underarm vents - I never got that typical chill from sweating after riding or teaching for a few hours.

I do ride indoors, but our indoor is somewhat drafty, and I run cold. I also ride a lot (about 3 a day) and thus am out in it for quite a while… I do fine in the hip length parka usually through tacking up horse #2 at which point I get cold and stay that way… and yes, I do wool socks, fleece breeches, base layer, etc. It’s being out in it for a few hours, even in an indoor, that I get cold.

The Asmar All Weather Rider is so pretty, but Dover has an old version of it - you can see the last two seasons colors on the Asmar website… in any case, much too light for your needs! It’s definitely more of a rain jacket with a bit of warmth.

Check out the outerware at The Connected Rider store. They have some unique options for coats!

These recently popped up in my FB feed:

They have “Arctic Insulated Riding Skirts”.

Pretty! But a little pricey, IMO, since it is just the skirt.
