Looking for a great barn in Columbus, OH

Hi everyone! I am a student at Ohio State and I am looking for a new barn to ride at in the Columbus area… I just began riding English this past winter and have been loving. I’ve been having difficultly finding a good barn to ride at, however, and would love some help! The main aspects of a barn that I would like are:

  • the willingness to teach me about horsemanship in addition to riding skills… I’d like to be at a barn that could take me on as an intern/volunteer to learn all about horse management and care
  • a kind and patient instructor who is willing to work with young adults like me
  • either a hunter/jumper or eventing focus

That’s a lot to ask, I completely understand, but if anyone could give me any guidance I’d greatly appreciate it! I really want to improve in my riding ability and I am willing to work hard to do so. Thanks everyone!

Jamie Mills at Empress Valley
Lindsay Yinger
Holly Helbig

You could ride for the IHSA team based out of Sid Griffiths in Hilliard, or ride there, they have lots of lesson horses.
Empress and Yinger are good but Holly is $$
Alisha Metcalfe at Far and Away
Hunters Creek in Westerville
Bookmark Farms
Honestly maybe even Duzan, they handle lots of beginners
and Redtail Ridge is the only eventing barn I know.
Good luck!

I did a ton of research before moving to Columbus and I ride at Hunters Court Farm in Johnstown. I highly recommend it, feel free to PM me for more info.

Give Joan Promen at Bookmark Farms in Pataskala a call. She’s wonderful and her barn is a fantastic place to learn and grow in all aspects of horsemanship.

thanks for the help, everyone! I am currently looking into one of these barns and will let you know how it goes… as always, though, I’d appreciate any other suggestions or tips! Thanks again!

You got lots of great recommendations here already, and it sounds like you’re well on your way to finding a great place to land. I ride and show local hunter/jumpers in Columbus, so if I can ever be of any help, drop me a line!

ETA: I’m an OSU alum myself and rode on the OSU IHSA team (numerous years ago), and I’ve also taken some lessons at Griffith’s before as well.

Limerick Lane (Maureen Fagan) would be great for what you are looking for. Her farm is also not too far from OSU, maybe 15 minutes. She is an excellent resource on horse management. She also manages the large animal research farm for OSU.
