Looking for a place to drive in Kentucky

I am a college student at UK and have been driving for 9 almost 10 years now and am looking from a driving barn in Lexington.

I am looking to get into/up farther into the driving world a little more and am hoping to find a barn I can show for or work with in or around Lexington.

My haflnger mare is the one I normally drive and I will be leaving her at home but taking my other mare who does not drive currently and who is still green as grass to ride down. So I won’t be able to drive and compete on her.

I was just wondering if any of you knew anyone or any barns in the area? Don’t let my age put some of you off I am very into driving and where I live youth are not viewed very well and often discouraged while showing by judges or other competitors.

Gayla Driving Center, Georgetown, or Sterling Grayburn (not sure of the farm name but in the same area)

I’m sorry that you spent your junior driver years being discouraged from driving! What an awful shame- but what a relief that you stuck with it anyway. My experience watching driving shows in the KY area is that they absolutely ADORE and cherish the junior drivers and believe that they are the future of the sport and really make a big fuss over them. Do you still compete as a Junior? (I shpouldn’t make assumptions- do you compete at all?)

One Jr. Driver who trained at Gayla was recently featured on the cover of young rider magazine.

The Carriage Association of America has their headquarters at the KHP and I bet they know other people who have boarding stables in the area as well- but between the two mentioned by 49’er… you really can’t go wrong. You are in such a hot spot!!

I’m also going to mention Hermitage Farm- which is in Kentucky- but is closer to Louisville. You will defiantly want to keep them on your radar. Hermitage Classic CDE is coming up in September.

I competed as a junior around here until my birthdaythis month and I am now considered as a Novice because I have only two blue ribbons. Until I get my third I am am still listed as a Novice. I compete here but most of the driving events are 3 hours minimum away. I was very lucky to have a driving instructor that kept me interested and have an awesome haflinger mare who is extremely talented and loves to drive. We actually have a show on Thursday.

Thank you for your information. I will definitely contact the Carriage Association and the other barns listed! Last year I volunteered at the KHP for one of the CDE’s and loved seeing and meeting some really encouraging people.

Sterling is at Sweet Dreams Farm 266 RUDDLES MILL CYNTHIANA RD
CYNTHIANA, KY 41031-9127

And don’t let the party poopers that are detered by your age let you down, you are the future of our sport.

I started driving at 5 and my first show was at 8.

Absorb, learn, ask questions, and we are all here to help you should you need it!

There are many Saddlebred barns in the area if you want to see that side of the driving world- Saddlebreds, Hackneys and Road Horses. http://www.saddlebred.com/breed/stables.php
