Looking for Campground- VA, WV or OH

Looking for a nice campground to camp at and trail ride from in VA, WV or OH. Would needs to have a bathhouse that is somewhat handicapped accessible. We are looking for electric and water hooks ups, as well as safe stalls or turnouts for horses.

We would like to be able to make reservations because of traveling with horses and wanting guaranteed campsites as well as stalls.

I have tried perusing the typical websites like HTCAA and TrailMeister, but and not finding a ton, and have found quite a few that are no longer in business.

We have stayed at Iron Mountain Horse Camp and Hungry Horse East in Ivanhoe, VA, as well as Stacked Stones Retreat in OH, and EJ’s Campground And Cabins in WV. We do head back to Hungry Horse East at least once a year because it is so nice, but we are looking for suggestions for at least two other campgrounds.

Any suggestions???

I have friends who ride and camp frequently in the James River area of Virginia. Try searching for Belmead Stables and Riding Club. I don’t know if they have a campground of the sort you need, but it’s a starting point. I think the folks there are very helpful and maybe they can point you in a productive direction.

Golden Pony- Fort Valley Ranch made my short list. Can you tell me what you love about it?

Have you looked into Salt Fork Horse Camp in Ohio? I know people that go camping there with their horses. I’m not sure if they have everything you need.

Fort Valley Horse and Mule Camp is actually in Fort Valley, Va. You can go through up over the mountain by Edinburg or travel through Waterlick outside of Front Royal, Va. I live here and know it well. At the end of Aug. or in Sept. Ty Evans, mule trainer from Utah, has a mule clinic there. I always go. Its not a fancy place but Fort Valley is beautiful and the riding through George Washington National Forest is great. It is rocky in some places and steep though. I hate the horseflys in the woods too. No complaints from me about the facilities. The prices are decent also. Open mostly year round I believe.

Just another plug for Fort Valley. The Fort Valley Vounteer Fire Dept. does their fried oyster and ham supper every March, April, October, and November. It is just the BEST! $14.00, six oysters from the Chesapeak Bay or ham or a combination of both. THEN unlimited sides, all homemade, of cole slaw, saurekraut and kelbasa, green beans and country ham, Fort Valley parsley potatoes, rolls, applesauce, pickles, and homemade deserts. It is so dang good! People come from all around. The seating is family style and very friendly and fun. I go everytime.
There is also another riding stable in Fort Valley called Secret Passage Ranch, Fort Valley, Va. Never rode there but it looks nice and one of my friends are close to them.

I’ve not been there but I’ve heard that Barkcamp in OH is really nice.

This is the mule trainer who comes to Fort Valley, Va. every year if you are ever close by. There are usually horses in the clinic too.
