Looking for Equestrian Sports Psychologist

Like the title says, has anyone had any experience with an sports psychologist for riders? Specifically, I’m looking for someone who can help me with anxiety, etc. who is in the NJ area.

Riding a horse is different from football, basketball, tennis, etc. so I’m hesitant about going to just a general psychologist. Any recommendations and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Majorie sugarman! Believe she is in New York. Worked with her for years and LOVE her.

Dr. Jenny Susser. She’s the best. Just google her.

If you have a chance before you meet with someone, I would read Inside Your Ride by Tanya Johnston.

She is really outstanding and sometimes it’s more productive to do a little work by yourself to ferret out what specifically you’re having trouble with. It makes the therapy that much more efficient. Just a gentle suggestion!

I have this book also and I love it. Janet Edgette also has some good books with helpful exercises – I used Heads Up! and enjoyed it.

There is no one better than Daniel stewart!

Marjorie Sugarman. Helped me through anxiety and she rides. She’s in NY but consults over the phone. I read some of the books, but found having someone to talk to helped a lot. Good luck!

Another vote for Dr. Jenny Susser.

I have worked with Lynda for a couple of years and very highly recommend her. You can do skype sessions with her. This is the best thing I have ever done for myself/my riding. I know other people on COTH have used her too and still do.

It’s a super investment to make in yourself!

www.ridingfar.com He does do phone and Skype consultations. However, I have to say that finding someone to actually sit down with is hugely beneficial. Can’t imagine getting the same feedback over the phone.

I did actually spend the better part of a year with a sports psychologist (the one I linked). It was amazingly beneficial. We definitely made some big break throughs in some bad, bad show nerves, but also a lot of great stuff in my personal and professional life. While I haven’t seen him since I broke my leg 18 months ago, I attribute the peace and ease I’ve felt over some big changes I made because of that accident to the work we did. If you can find one that you work well with, it can be a really great thing. Also, realize that you have to have a relationship with whoever you settle on. You need to feel comfortable REALLY sharing, so if you don’t feel you can, it’s not a good fit. Sometimes you’ve got to shop around a bit, just like with trainers.

Good idea. I was looking for her book on Kindle but couldn’t find it. I’m going to order it. I have read some of the other self-help books, but I haven’t found them to be super helpful.

WOW and thanks everyone for the great suggestions!!! I hesitated about asking this question for awhile as I wasn’t sure what kind of response I was going to get. Now, I feel infinitely better because I’m not alone in needing to work through my anxiety issues with a professional. I soooooo appreciate this.

it is Margie Sugarman not Marjorie, and yes, she is awesome!
