Looking for Equine Bloggers

I just finished my latest equine mystery, “Commander Speaks,” and I’m looking for equine bloggers who might want to review it. Please drop me a note at boomerversebooks@gmail.com

Here’s the gist:

Commander, a German show jumper recently imported to the U.S. for a successful mystery writer, won’t stop biting his new owner. She hires an animal communicator to talk to Commander to find out why he’s biting. That’s an easy fix. Not so easy to fix are the crimes Commander is witnessing at his barn, crimes that he insists be stopped immediately.

This unlikely trio – the horse, the animal communicator and the mystery writer – sets out to solve the murder of one of America’s most despicable horse trainers, who has an eye for underage girls, and save a groom wrongly accused of drugging a horse.

“Commander Speaks” is mostly a funny look at the Hunter/Jumper world. How could a book starring a talking horse with large opinions and an even bigger heart be anything but humorous? However, the humor stops when Commander and his crew take a hard look at predatory behavior in equine sports.

I am the author of “Horse of a Different Killer,” “Chestnut Mare, Beware,” and “In Colt Blood” – featured in People Magazine as a Pick of the Week, nominated for an Agatha award and translated worldwide. As a feature writer for the Charlotte Observer, I was on the team that won the Gold Medal Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.

thanks
Jody

That Nattie is taking a vacation. Imagine a Nattie-type 30 years later. Here’s the gist of “Commander Speaks:”

But the humor stops when Commander and his crew take a hard look at both predatory behavior in equine sports and horse abuse.

Wait no longer! Commander Speaks – (Mr. Ed meets Agatha Christie) – is now on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DRPMHJSY.
I plan to donate the proceeds to Type 1 Diabetes research. As you will read in “Commander Speaks,” Type 1 is a nasty auto-immune disease that wreaks havoc on families, most especially the one who has to inject insulin and deal with extremely painful and potentially fatal low-sugar episodes. I hope to live long enough to see my son lead an insulin-free life. So if your life has been changed by Type1, please share to others in similar situations.
Thanks and happy trails,
Jody.

I just bought it as well. I can’t wait to read this (after I finish a library book!). Thanks for posting.

I am so, so excited! I loved your earlier books and can’t wait to read this one!

I am rarely on COTH so am extra excited that I saw this post! Happy new year, Jody!

Thank so much. I thought there would be blowback for writing about the two biggest, and most controversial issues in equine sports --horse abuse and predatory behavior because an editor said the plot lines of “Commander Speaks” were “not in the best interest of the industry.” Happy to say, so far, I am wrong. This is an excerpt from Equiery’s review: "Even though this is a murder mystery with an unsettling topic, the book is humorous and engaging, but somber when it needs to be. Jaffe calls out the hypocrisy of the horse world that pretends to love horses but goes to obscene lengths to get the desired results.”

Indeed, obscene lengths. Did you all see DiAnn Langer’s article in The Chronicle: https://www.chronofhorse.com/article/see-something-say-something-we-need-a-strong-immediate-response-to-abuse/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2Mltouo6l7S9n5JP9l1QPxz8909O60GKkvWippqm6c3a4NgPInwvaPOa8_aem_JBZ1k8gJVDBrbZWVJfQzkA

I enjoyed the book! These topics SHOULD be written about, bringing awareness.

Thanks so much. The only way to stop it, is to first expose it.
