my horse bolts when unloading fresh m the trailer, often hitting his head. Does anyone have a used Equiface saver they want to sell since they don’t make them anymore? Otis there’s better way?
Ouch!
Glue a cheap yoga mat to the roof where he hits it?
Until you get a head bumper, wrapping loosely a face towel to the top of his halter and taping it there may help.
That problem should be temporary.
Once better trained you may not have to use anything any more.
Long term, you definitely need to work on training. Short term, you could probably use a regular head bumper for the top, and sew some kind of padding (neoprene sheets? Quilted wraps?) into appropriate places in a a “sleezy” hood or one of these stretchy fly masks with round bug eye holes.
Would a piece of a pool noodle on the top of the halter work?
Pool noodles are cheap and if one piece tears, you can slip another in there.
If they tear too easily duct tape over them.
Temporary fixes, until you find a head bumper and/or fix the rushing problem.
Genius!!!
Another suggestion. For now. Teach your horse how to take one step at a time both forward and backward.
this is a great skill to teach the because it also teaches them to listen better to you, and to calm themselves before
they panic and in general it’s a great skill for them to learn. Use any term like “step” (then they halt) (and then they think)
It’s also a cornerstone of teaching many other things like: step up. climb stairs, back into a small area,
Many, many trailers are too low for high headed horses even going slowly and not panicking.
I would pad both the halter and the doorway/frame of trailer and buy a headbumper.
I use Dollar Tree pool noodles for a lot of things:
*Shaft covers for my cart (have to split them lengthwise or buy the more pricy wider ones)
*Hunk slipped over the parts of the cart - back on the wire cart, spindleseat on the wood - I attach ratchet straps to
*Slice used to stop my center gate in the trailer from banging
Agree training will fix things once & for all, but until then why risk an owie?
If this is going to be a long term problem, you could get a leather worker to copy the equiface saver thing. If you don’t have someone local, check etsy–or, hit the Renaissance fair when they come to town. They’ll know someone who could do it.
They do show up on eBay sometimes, so keep an eye out there, too.
