I have loved very thin light reins. I have used a pair or elasticized reins that have rubber woven into them with stops. I was trying a new bit and the reins on the bridle were a little thicker/ heavier and I think I like that feeling on my new horse! They were old, brown laced reins that the laces were coming off, so I need to order something. What are your recommendations?
Were they just regular leather 5/8" laced reins? I do like reins like that, especially if they are supple and well-broken in.
Yes! I felt like I’ve come full circle back to Pony Club days!
I also really love old school leather plaited reins. Soft and conforming to my hands, a nice weight, they just feel amazing.
If you want braided reins, consider Freedman’s Harness reins, which are available in different widths. As long as your horse doesn’t chew or break them, I’ve had a pair since 2000 that are in perfect condition.
They aren’t what the cool kids use, and I’m not sure if they have black in stock, but they are my favorite reins. As soon as my horse stops chewing on my reins, I’m putting them back on my bridle.
I have come to love my solid leather reins, I believe they are 3/4" wide. They are not cheap, sometimes you can get them on sale. But they are solid and do have a bit more weight than braided reins- haven’t used those for years!, or the nubby elasticized ones. The solid leather give a great feel and some substance in your hands , and at age 69 my arthritic fingers prefer that.
