Looking for hunting mentor

Hello!

I live in northern nj near NYC and am looking for a partner/ mentor/ friendly sort to help me and my mare to get into hunting and hunter pacing. I’m a good all around horse woman in my mid thirties and my mare is a good trail horse bold forward and not spooky, if a little out of shape

Once you find out what hunts are local to you via the MFHA link above, I’d suggest you look for a “learn to hunt” clinic to take with your mare. Many hunts do them and it’s a great way to get introduced to the intricacies of the sport in a controlled situation that does not have the pressure of being a real hunt.

Depending on the clinic, you might even get to do a mock hunt with hounds and horn–which is as close as you can get to the real thing in a low pressure situation. You’ll also get to meet some of the members of the hunt at the clinic, which might lead to a mentor.
