Looking for Indianapolis area barn

Greetings, all! I’m brand spanking new to eventing, having fallen in love after attending a recent eventing camp. I’m interested in switching from my current hunter/jumper barn to an eventing barn, but I’m a bit clueless as to what is good in my area.

I’m hoping to find a barn in or near the Indianapolis area- within half an hour would be preferable, as my plan is to be at the barn several days a week.

Anyone out there have recommendations? Many thanks!

Which side of Indy? That makes a fair bit of difference.

Just north of Indy (Sheridan), there is Come Again Farms (is that where you attended camp?) which is run by LAZ on the boards here. I’m sure she’ll chime in, but I know CAF has a full xc course from GAG to Prelim including water, ditches, banks and nice facilities with multiple rings (2 each indoor and outdoor), grass galloping track, big pastures for turn out, really nice stadium fences and lots of improvements each year.

Just south of Indy (Greenwood) is Dan Hobyn Stables. I haven’t been there in a while but I know it has been recently revamped and brought back up to date. Full xc GAG to Training I think & indoor and outdoor ring.

ETA: Also, southeast of Indy (Fairland - near Shebyville/Indiana Downs) is Fairland Farms. I’ve never been to the facilities, but hear it is lovely. I know the family that owns the barn and the trainer and both are good people.

Those are the [three] big active barns in the area. I’m sure there are other smaller barns that I just can’t think of right now.

Since you’re thinking of joining the dark side in Indiana (yay btw!), I also have to include a plug for IEA (Indiana Eventing Association). Great organization with lots of benefits for members and good people. PM me if you want more info

Dan Hobyn is wonderful. I love everyone out there and the care is A+ for the horses. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions regarding the facilities =]

Just out of curiosity, where do you board now? Feel free to PM if you like.

Another plug for LAZ’s barn! Never been to the others mentioned but LAZ has everything you could possibly want and is an awesome trainer!

There are definitely not a lot of EVENTING barns near Indy… But the ones mentioned are nice. There is also On The Rail Farm in Fortville, IN- not specifically eventing… but the owners event.

Depending on your trailer situation, you could also board close to your house/work and trailer in for lessons. I board at a very small private farm that I love and I trailer to lessons.

Feel free to PM me. IN Eventers are a great and friendly bunch

There is also upnover (the Noons) toward Bloomington http://www.upnoverstable.com/contact

But I also agree that for someone new to eventing, LAZ is a great choice

Many thanks for the suggestions! I live near Eagle Creek, about 15 minutes northwest of the center of the city (within the loop). The north or west side suburbs are a little more convenient for me than south or east but really, I’m willing to drive any direction to find a good place to learn.

I will be looking in to all the options you suggested, as well as IEA. Very excited to join the eventing community!!!

You are in my neck of the woods then. Howdy, neighbor!

Geographically, Eron Owens of Grey Stone eventing at IRUS Stables in Lebanon may be closer. Roughly 30 minutes away, straight up I-65.

10 thumbs up for Greystone.

Loved being at Erons.

Took your advice and checked out Eron at Greystone. Been riding there a few months now and I couldn’t be happier! I’m completely new to eventing, and still relatively new to riding overall (rode a bit as a kid, took quite a few years off for college and grad school, now re-learning as an adult) and she’s been just amazing. My riding has already changed dramatically.

Huge thanks for the recommendation, and PM me if you’re ever interested in connecting (since you’re in my area). Would always be interested in having an equestrian friend!

So glad you ended up at Eron’s and are happy! I didn’t even think to add her place when I initially responded. I always think of her as much further away (but I live an hour SE of Indy). She and Scott are great. I’m sure I’ll meet you at some point but feel free to message me if you have any questions about IEA or eventing in the area.

Okay totally off topic here. I’m the new tack shop in town and was at Eron’s delivering a helmet Wednesday! Everyone there is so nice! Don’t know if I met you while I was there, but I was impressed with both Eron and her facility! It’s so fun to have active COTHers locally! If you guys ever want to connect PM me!

We are online and mobile! But we do farm deliveries and go to the horse shows.

We will be at Dan Hobyn tomorrow for the Horse Trials! Will you be there?

Sorry, I didn’t see this until Monday–I had several folks riding at Dan Hobyn but had a full day here so didn’t get down. It was a hot one! Let me know if you are interested in another schooling HT’s–mine is in October, I generally get 50-60 horses.

You’ve got Kim Neumeyer, Gina Pletch, Robin Ridgway up there that all come here to school and show, and also go to the HHP and Flying Cross in KY.

I don’t know Robin, but Kim and Gina are wonderful!
