I’m not sure where to put this but since we are talking about TB’s i figured I would try here. I have acquired a mare that is by City Sharpster and am looking to see if anyone knows anything about temperament of his foals. My mare has 60 starts and retired with a clean set of xrays which astounds me. She has been a hard nut to crack and I am looking for some incite as to mostly temperament of his foals as she has proven to be extremely athletic and scopy when she is “on” per say. Any help would be appreciated even if it is to recommend another forum to post this.
I have never heard about their temperament
You parachuted in just to say that? WTF?
LOL!!! I was just curious as to if my mare’s nuttiness is breeding or something else. She is one of the most athletic mares I have ever ridden with such scope and is a beautiful mover. Plus she retired after 60 starts with clean x rays but she is a tough ride and very reactive. I’m hoping that it isn’t the breeding but since I don’t really know much about her sire I wanted to see if anyone else could give some input.
I don’t know too much about City Sharpster, but my two cents:
I would not say Carson City is known for bad temperaments. The opposite, in my experience. I absolutely love Carson City as a sire, his offspring I’ve known have all been nice, classy horses… and very good movers. I can spot a CC a mile away, they tend to have a very nice, open way of going I just love.
The damside, the only thing I can see is Nijinsky - he is not known as a bad temperament contributor either, but I’ve handled a few of his get that were on the sensitive side - not bad or nutty in any way, just need quiet rides.
My two cents? You mentioned she is was a campaigner. I would suspect she just needs some time to unwind a little mentally AND physically. I’ve had several warhorses and they can be a little tight and gunshy at first but really come out of their shell after a year or so.
I also would not put any soreness past her - pain certainly can make horses more reactive. There is no way, IMHO, that a horse that raced 60 times has no body complaints - it’s just not physically possible even in the best of care. At minimum, when I look at a horse with more than 35 starts I expect ulcers and I also expect back-sore/SI issues - both of which are treatable. I might consider some body work and maybe some joint supplements. 60 starts is a long and hard career most horses don’t even come close to obtaining; every horse I’ve gotten off the track north of 35 starts has had some sort of body complaint from their career. Most of it has been manageable but a lot of them came with sore backs/SIs from racing, ulcers, and some minor complaints in their hind end… so it’s something to look into. Even if the rads are clean that’s no guarantee she is pain free.
I looked at the fillies City Sharpster has - is this your mare?

If so… that’s a pretty nice pedigree… and the damside is even better iMHO, I would kill for an AP Indy x Blue Ensign horse… wow. The damside also has some good names and no names in there I’d say are sharp or fractious.
I know that just because she has clean xrays that that doesn’t mean that she is pain free. Since she came to me in November of 2017 I have treated her for ulcers and been working with a great chiropractor to get her back strait. Her last scope showed that she is currently ulcer free (now we are working on a maintenance regiment that will keep them gone). She is out 24/7 in a very drama free heard and comes in to eat 2x a day. Her last start was November of 2016 and I know she had at least two owners in the year between her last start and when I got her.
She is super sweet and doesn’t seem to have a mean bone in her body. She loves attention and actually seeks out me while I am going chores around her pasture. When her routine changes or if someone new is handling her she is very guarded and reactive. She has a lifetime home with me but I would like to figure out a way that others can handle her without her being so reactive. Under saddle we have good days and bad days. I have learned to be happy with the small things on bad days. She takes a very quiet and soft ride and has to have someone that will not get upset with her antics because she feeds off her rider so if you get worried or upset up she gets worse. I enjoy her under saddle but I know that she is a ride that few would enjoy. I am getting ready to have my vet do a reproductive workup on her to rule out pain with her cycle.
No that isn’t my mare. This is her:

and while the query says she only had 10 starts, that was just her 3yo year. When I pulled her Equibase report it showed 60 starts. I was really surprosed. They were all at either Delaware Park or Penn National.
That’s good to hear!
I might check her back/neck next, honestly. She sounds a lot like a horse I had that has KS.
