Looking for Jim and Faye Little

OMG this thread brings back so many great memories! I rode at Pegasus-Meadowbrook from age 9 when we moved to the area from New York, that was 1966, until I was 14 and my parents bought my first pony from the Littles. Several months after that we moved my pony closer to where we lived, to board at Wheaton Park Stables. They had such a great program at P-M, I remember going to camp there in the summers and how in the morning they’d put all the mares and then all the geldings in the arena and gallop them around. The tetherball in the circle in the center of the driveway at Pegasus and how the barn was built into the hill. I remember many of the horses and ponies already mentioned, plus Daddy Long Legs (tall chestnut), Sherman (because he was built like a tank), Sassafras (Sassy). Farnley Netta had that gray in her tail and I remember the first time I rode her, what a nice ride she was. My first horse show was a student show there, I did walk trot and won a blue ribbon. Trail riding in Rock Creek Park, and sometimes we’d go to some arena in the middle of the park and jump. So much more… I went back some years ago to see it (I don’t live in the area) and where Pegasus was it was houses. I was devastated. So cool to hear about others, but I don’t remember many people names.

Of note, one must remember dear old Claude who’s bench is forever in place still at Meadowbrook w/ plaque (Claud’s Bench") I do think they removed his “don’t even think of parking here sign” but that must’ve been some time after the Littles.

I do have some pictures. I’ll get them together and post them here, and I hope you and others will too.
Lots has been posted since I was here last. Yes, now I remember Carmen as you have described her. I have a few photos - just don’t know how to post them here. I also have one of their old brochures from when I was an instructor. Thanks for reminding me of Dee’s last name - I was lost on that one!

Ah yes, Sherman. I was there when he was purchased and enjoyed being a part of the naming process for him. Darkhorsecj, we were there at the same time. I was a student in 1966-67 and then an instructor for a year or so… One of the photos I have is of Claude leading the App mare I worked with some, Glory Bee. Another photo is of me with The Elite drinking some Coke out of a can, a favorite of hers.

Meadowbrook Stables Reunion 11/08/2014

Who is attending the black tie fundraiser/reunion this November?

I can’t believe I found this thread. I remember quite a few of the people and many of the horses. Who can forget Claude?

Meadowbrook Reumion

Reading this thread is like a walk down memory lane. I was at PM Stables when Fen was on her way out and the Little’s were coming in. You all that are out there need to know that Meadowbrook is celebrating their 80th year this year and there is a Gala at the Chevy Chase Women’s Club on Nov 8. Go to the Meadowbrook Stables page and you can read about it and come. I’m going with a friend that I rode with in the late 60’s and early 70’s and my Mom who rode at Meadowbrook in the 40’s. We sent plenty of pictures, which they asked for and I’ve been looking for folks to come. David Bradley has the lease on Meadowbrook, I believe and he should be there along with Bill Wolf and I hope some other folks from the era.

Yes I remember Leaflet, By Gosh, all the school ponies and don’t forget Carmen, Sugar Plum, Sun Daddy, Rosie too! They were what got us all started.

Faye is in Fla and Mr. Little did pass away a couple of years ago. I did hear that Jamie Little did come by the barn. Brook is in Fla at Mrs. Littles farm and Mrs. Little is in NC helping with her brother who is ill.

Email me is you are interested in the Gala and I’ll send a copy of the invitation. My name is Lee Marshall shoeboxbkpg3@cs.com.

What fond memories!

I spent some of the best Saturdays of my life taking lessons at Pegasus in 1968-70, as well as just hanging around Meadowbrook. I was never much of a rider, but I loved the horses and got to know them all.

My favorite horse to ride was So-So, who’d put his big chestnut head down for a small child (I was a peanut) to put the bridle on. I also was very fond of Biscuit, whose real name I think was Farnley Biscayne. I also remember Dominique, the piebald with a beer belly, who’d go through your pockets. Carmen I remember as somewhat ill-tempered, as was Rosie. Hercules (or Herky) was a very cute little gray pony; Candyman had one blue eye; Pooh was so small that he looked kind of like a foal, but he was very clever at running away from children who were walking him to the riding ring. Boomerang (Boom) was a liver chestnut who once bit me. ICU was a roan.

I remember the one-eyed Arabian-type horse; the name began with Ch- , I seem to remember. She was at Meadowbrook. There was also a horse named Lucky, a longtime boarder, who’d learned to shake hands and would wave his leg at you. Also at Meadowbrook at that time were Aida and Gypsy Jinks, two elegant horses ridden by a distinguished-looking older man, Colonel someone.

David Bradley now owns The Atlantic Publishing Company - I’ve corresponded with him on occasion.
More School Horses - By Gosh, Down Pat, Farnley ICU, So-So, Trademark, Jupiter, Farnley Netta, I think instead of Carmen you might mean Carmina. Young horses we worked with as instructors: Glory Bee, The Elite, Rushcutter (then Kit Baker bought him), Year of Grace.

Boarder - Aida
I too was a barn rat there but a decade earlier. It’s where I learned not only to ride but to take apart a bridle. My friend ended up with Biscuit. I can’t believe you remember The Colonel! You must remember Claude White, too!

Ah, here he is, Col. Rene Studler: I see that the Washington Bridle Trails Association has a trophy in his name.

My father would leave me off at Meadowbrook when he went to play tennis in the courts behind the stable, and I would hang around the stable for hours, trying not to be in the way. I also would stay the whole day to watch class after class at the various Meadowbrook horse shows. (I was about 10 years old.) Eventually I had the chance to take lessons at Pegasus until I moved to New Jersey. I was never very good – not surprising when you’re on a horse for just a few minutes a week – but I didn’t care; I loved it anyway.

I used to keep a chart listing the horse I’d ride each Saturday morning, along with the other horses in the class. I don’t remember any of the kids’ or teachers’ names, but I remember almost all the horses! I have a picture of me up on So-So somewhere; he was well over 20 years old when I was there, but still a beautiful big chestnut horse and very obliging.

My favorite horse in the barn was Sassafras, a blackish pony of about 14 hands, with a narrow blaze. She was just so beautiful and elegant. It was always my fantasy to ride her.

And the Answer is…

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is James Little (Jamie). I am the son of Jim and Faye Little, formerly living at Pegasus Meadowbrook Stables.

Reading through this thread made me feel like I should join COTH and it’s Forums so that I may answer any questions folks have.

Faye Little is alive and well, currently living in Ocala, Florida.

Jim Little passed away in late February 2007. He lived a wonderful life and was remembered by many who attended his Memorial.

My Sister, Brooke Little, also lives in Ocala along with her mother and started a small horse business of her own called Marchadors in Motion. http://www.marchadorsinmotion.co/

If anyone wishes to contact either Faye or Brooke Little they may do so via the website above.

As for myself. I now live in Anchorage, Alaska, where I work for a Air Cargo Logistics company and airline called Lynden International. I have been here for 13 years, so far, and enjoy it very much.

If anyone has any questions beyond what I have posted please contact me. I will do my best to help.

Thank you for all the memories posted throughout this thread. I do appreciate it and I will be forwarding them on to my Mother.

James

I don’t know your family but it was very nice of you to post this update. I’m sure lots of people will be happy to read it. Welcome to the forums.

I’m an innocent bystander (lol) but this is a great thread. It is very heartwarming to read along and have all the folks chime in with their memories of what was obviously a special place.

And then to have James chime in - that’s fabulous. No, I don’t know any of you, but thanks for letting me have a peek at your childhood barn

I am so happy to see this thread revived and to have a place to write to Faye Little, who helped me survive my senior year of high school, gave me a pony for my own for that year, and sent me off to college with words that have influenced me ever since. Thank you everyone and especially Jamie, whose birth I remember!
