Looking for manure spreader chain..... I know it is a longshot.....

Damn. But for want of a nail the war was lost.
In the cold one of the links on my old Hew Holland manure spreader broke. Each link is 2" x 2.5" and all I need is 1 link.

AARRGGHHHHHHHH.

Would anyone know where I could find chain for an OLD New Holland spreader? I have tried the equipment stores in my area of NC. Nothing.

I am not holding out much hope, but COTH has come through for me before. Thanks ----

Hi,
We have an old formerly horse-drawn, ground drive spreader of unknown brand that we have had to replace links in the web for several times. Our local implement dealer/repair shop has always had them in stock. They do not seem to be brand-specific. Did you take in your broken one to see if they can match it?

Try your local co-op. If they don’t have one they might be able to give you some suggestions.

New Holland is still an existing company. Try them. http://agriculture.newholland.com/us/en/Pages/homepage.aspx

Google “antique farm equipment” or “new holland manure spreaders” and see what you find.

As other have said easily had at an Ag part supply. I have not found the chain to be brand specific. Pretty much all use the same and have been for years. Don’t think you can buy just one link it comes in rolls of different lengths. Around here 10’ being the shortest I think. Not that expensive. No special tools needed to fix. Fold back the link and separate. If one broke due to age good chance others will in the near future. Might be worth replacing the whole chain depending on cost.
If you live near me I have a roll and happy to give you a couple.

I’m pretty sure they also sell single links. It just folds together. I think I have some hanging on a nail in the tractor shed. If you can’t find single links, PM me your address and I’ll send you one. I’ll check tomorrow to see if there are any out there.

If you haven’t found this part, and the link earlier was not the right one, can you post a pic? We used to have an archaic New Holland-and it had a way different link than the one posted. If you post pic, I may be able to help. Possibly even find an old link wandering around.

OP, Millcreek carries parts for other brands and may be able to help, if you’re not able to track down links locally or through New Holland. Give them a call at 800-321-1323 if you need to ask, or even just if you want advice - Brandon will be glad to help!

It the chain doesn’t look like the one Tom King linked to it must be a very old machine. I should think this has a chain tension adjustment on it. It is how you get the chain back on most machines. All chains stretch over the years and need periotic adjustment. There is a good chance given its age that it has been adjusted out to its maximum range or close. You could bring it all the way back, reconnect the chain with the broken link removed and see if the shorter chain will fit. You can measure how much “travel” there is on tensioner before doing the above work. Depending on the sprocket measurement you might be able to replace the whole chain with a newer one if the machine is worth the expense.

We live in Amish land and they still use machines made decades ago. Pretty easy to find an Amish “Smitty” that could make a new link for not much money.

World’s Only Stainless Steel Compact Spreaders w/ Lifetime Warranty against rust-through!

Nothing personal but IMO your “signature” comes off as “advertising”. If I were to use as my “signature” Gum Tree Stables home of many horses for sale and provided a link it would be taken down. Perfectly understandable.

Those are the same kind of chains, mostly came in two different sizes, that we had in our Dempster drills.

There is a little tool, called a “hand”, that you can use to take them apart and add or take a link or several off.

You can also punch the links apart with a screwdriver and hammer, but it takes longer.

I am not sure manure spreaders would work with those chains, they are not that stout, at least not the sizes we used.

Tractor Supply has different kinds of farm equipment chains, see what they have where you are.
Here is one of those:

OP, could you take a picture of the chain, see what you have there?

There is one whole apron on ebay and also more chain itself:

How old is your spreader? Mine is probably a '70’s model and the chain looks like the stuff Tom King posted. We’ve got a bunch of it- DH bought a forage wagon at auction for the running gear and used less than half the chain from it to replace the chain in our spreader. The spreader is a NH, the forage wagon wasn’t, but I can’t remember the brand. For $200, we got the fixin’s for a nice hay wagon and several hundred $$ worth of chain. Prior to that we’d get links at our local equipment dealer.

We have a circa 1920 something spreader that my husband completely restored, just put a new chain on it. Tractor Supply is less than useless IME, if they have it, great, if not, they can call you if it comes in, but they don’t special order. Our chain is a AL67, square linked dealie. Tractor Supply gets them from Allied-Locke, who doesn’t sell direct, but if you call them, they will very nicely put you in touch with one of their distributors who will hook you up.

I tried and tried to deal with local Ag suppliers, and TS, and a couple of weeks later was still chainless. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was less than 45 minutes from my phone call to Allied-Locke until my chain was boxed and awaiting pick up by UPS, it shipped out that same day and I had it in two days. GREAT company.
