Looking for New barn near Portland Maine

Hello, I will be moving to Portland ME from RI soon and need to find a new barn. Hunter/jumper, but not all that important. I own a 13 yo mare. Looking for full board with an indoor. Like to show but more for fun. Thanks!

I would suggest you change the topic of your thread to say something like “Looking for a show barn in RI”. You’ll have a better chance of attracting the right audiance.

She’s already in RI, she’s looking for a barn in Portland Maine,. But, yes, please add that info to to your title. Right now, reader can’t know if you are looking for advice on changing barns, asking what to look for in a barn, building a barn or buying and installing one or asking about barns in a new location.

Its easy, go to the lower right hand corner of you post, click on the edit icon, click on go advanced then scroll up to the title and add “in Portland Maine”. Unless you are changing the title, you don’t need to click on advanced, you can edit your post with just the first edit screen.

OP, sorry to report, Maine is kind of a lousy place to live if you do H/J even semi-seriously. Very southern Maine (Yorks, Berwick, etc) has some H/J barns that do the rated New England shows, but you’re likely going to have to do some serious driving to find an A-show quality barn, both IRT instruction and board quality. Greystone Stables in Berwick is about an hour from Portland, depending on where you’ll be living. That might be your best option.

That’s what I’ve heard so far! So what do Maine barns typically do other than H/J?? Ultimately the care is what it comes down to but I still want to be able to jump!

There are some hunter/jumper barns in Maine that do local hunter/jumper shows. There are a few that do the bigger rated shows, but as Maine does not have any USEF rated hunter or jumper shows in the state, you will have to go out of state to find those. There are, however, a number of eventing barns in Maine–so those people jump. There used to be a number of barns near Portland, ME, but there don’t seem to be as many as there were. Barns with indoors near Portland would include Royalsborough Farm in Durham, ME (that is a hunter/jumper barn), the old Kent farm–I do not know what it is called–that is in I think Gorham, ME. I do not know what discipline they are now. There should be a couple of barns with indoors in Gorham, ME, but I can’t think of them off the top of my head. In buxton, ME there is Rummler Run Farm…she has an indoor. She both jumps and does dressage, and while she is not a hunter/jumper barn per se, she has done some of the local hunter shows, and I know she has in the past gone out of state to bigger shows as well. She is actually a warmblood breeding farm. If I think hard enough I may be able to come up with some more.

Knew I’d think of another one; there is Venture Farm in Pownal, ME–she is a hunter/jumper barn.

Swan Brook is in Biddeford, about 35 minutes South. They are more eventing focused and do have a large indoor.
