Loose/lost dog issue - What to do

Property next to where I board my horse has a bunch of people living there in house and a couple RVs. Over the two years they have been there, dogs have come and gone. Also have some farm animals.

  1. Maybe 2+ weeks ago a boxer dog was laying outside their fence near closed driveway gate. No one home. One of our boarders has seen him inside the fence so several hours later she put him in.
  2. A little over a week ago a boxer (same dog) was found wandering on busy 2 lane road about a mile away, picked up by caring person and eventually returned to owner. Owner had not been looking for dog.
  3. Yesterday morning a boxer found again, near the busy 2 lane road in someone’s pasture, a mile or more away. Yep, same boxer. Dog apparently has chip, this finder somehow tracked down original owner. Orig owner gave the dog to his close friend a while ago, but would not give finder their # or address but said he would tell them who has found the dog.
I have been in contact with finder via FB. She is still awaiting contact from the current owner; I’m having real concerns about the dog going back to that property, as he’s clearly not properly contained and will end up getting killed. Finder’s inclination, after I updated her on the recent history is to wait for owner to call and if they dont, after mandatory period, put the dog with a rescue group for adoption.
I could pick the dog up and take it to its current home, but I’m not inclined to do that given my concerns. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I would call animal control and send them over there. And any dog I found off their property would go straight to the local shelter where they would have to pay to bail

Not your circus, not your monkeys.

You informed the finder of some additional details on the dog, and I would leave it at that. I would not want to get tangled up in any drama or responsiblity of said dog.

@ Munching…That’s much what I was thinking. BUT the good news, finder was finally contacted by owners and they surrendered the dog to her. YAY, he is a nice dog, will find an adopter pretty quickly. We have a few interested people but they were understandably worried about the messy situation.

I would pick up the dog and just keep it if I was in a position to do so. Clearly the owners wouldn’t mind.

Yay!
But how does the chip info get transferred?
I doubt former owners would bother if the dog was lost again & their info was still on record as owners.

You call up the chip company and change over the info. They might ask for some $$.

There are also several companies where it’s free to register a chip number. So you could add him to those, too.

Hooray this dog has been surrendered to people who care a little more about him :heart:
