Lord Leatherdale, Everdale & Chippendale Stallions

Hi All,

Just wondering if there is any experience/knowledge on what each of these stallions bring to the table?

Obviously Lord Leatherdale, as the sire of the other 2, produces very well with the Negro line. But was wondering what the 3 of them tended to pass on conformation wise? (I understand they all have very good temperaments and are modern - refining and add freedom to the shoulder)

I am specifically looking for temperament, elastic movement, good sloping shoulder with freedom to move, uphill conformation with long front legs & no toeing out of the front legs (I note that Sir Sinclair can pass this on).

Assuming you already know that Sir Sinclair is not in the pedigree of these stallions, though your post might sound as if you think he is.

I was looking at all three of those stallions to breed a Sandro Hit mare to this year. I chose Chippendale, but it was a tough decision and I weighed each one carefully. Not sure what the foal is going to “bring to the table” but hopefully “temperament, elastic movement, good sloping shoulder with freedom to move, uphill conformation with long front legs & no toeing out of the front legs.” We’ll see this spring!

FWIW, I have a Negro yearling that does toe out a bit. He doesn’t wing or paddle and it doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t think that’s something that is regularly passed on by Negro, but just saying…

I think Lord Leatherdale almost consistently helps increase length of the front leg (could double check the KWPN reports to be sure) . . . And that is probably one of the reasons he seems to work well with Negro (shorter legs). They should all add shoulder freedom (maybe Lord Leatherdale and Chippendale more than Everdale - but hard to say). I would use Lord Leatherdale on a mare with a good walk or one that produces a good walk.

Sir Sinclair is by Lord Sinclair. I wasn’t sure whether Lord Sinclair passed the ‘toe out’ on.

Thank you all.

Can I get the KWPN report on the net, or do I need to subscribe?

Horsey1cr - looking forwad to seeing that foal!

Do they tend to throw more compact types, or is that the Negro line coming in?

Only small input, but we’ve had two Lord Sinclair’s… both have beautiful correct legs.

Everdale just had his first foal crop evaluated in Holland and got very high praise. This was substantiated by the fact that he had several top selling foals at the auctions - 30 to 40 thousand Euros for weanlings!! Hilltop sold out of Everdale semen very quickly this year and I was lucky enough to get two of my top mares bred to him. Everdale’s breeding fee went up considerably for next year and deservedly so, but I will probably breed another one of my mares to him. Wow, Cartier! Gorgeous!!

I bought a breeding to Lord Leatherdale for 2014. While his licensed sons are very impressive, they are not yet proven as sires. Also, LL is happily working at the upper levels now, proving he is both capable and talented. Most reports say that he’s VERY willing to work, and passes on an excellent temperament. This video of him is new:

Thank you

Cartier your horses are certainly lovely.

Jdeboer01 they were my thoughts… LL is producing these amazing stallions, but I guess it’s a gamble breeding to one of his stallions in the hope that they will be even more superior with the added Negro line… crystal ball! lol

My mare is a maiden, so it’s even more of a gamble as to what she will definitely add to the mix.

Thanks Siegi b Fairytale is certainly another very special one. Although, he is not available in Aus as yet.

This was my thought as well and one of the reasons I picked Chippendale. I really like how he’s working at the moment and he is a bit further along than the gorgeous Everdale and Fairytale.

From another thread via Stolensilver:
“He’s a stallion I’ve got on my radar too. He appears to have a stellar temperament. Just watch this video, Chippendale is the other stallion in the ring with Jack Sparrow. And look what a consummate horseman Edward Gal is. I wouldn’t like to be sitting on Jack Sparrow when the clapping starts!”

Some insights about the Van Olst Stables stallions the OP is interested in, written by a UK breeder with close ties to the Van Olst program. http://www.lickleyhorses.com/2407/impressions-of-the-van-olst-stallion-show/.

Chippendale certainlt has the temo i’m after… Cant ask for any better behaviour than that!

Thanks Indy-Lou. Good to have some insight.

I wonder if any of them (meaning LL/Negro crosses) are throwing more or less bone, more or less length of leg than the others in the foals. I haven’t seen a KWPN report that lists the sons, but am wondering if anyone has seen any offspring and can comment on the differences? Van Olst has a lot of these horses–it seems to be a great cross for all the reasons kdavies mentioned. I also wondered if the temperament is a bit easier on the crosses vs. going to Negro directly?

It will be interesting to see which of all of these stallions ends up being the best producer and for what kind of mare(s). I would be tempted to just use Negro at this point while he is still available if I had a long legged mare…

When I was at Carl’s there was a Lord Leatherdale son. I can’t remember what mareline he was out of… But he was very huntery in his type and movement… I think the hunter breeders here could make a fortune if they crossed LL with the right mares… The gelding I knew was small, maybe 15.3. Super character.

We bred our Olivier x Doruto mare to Chippendale… can’t wait to see what comes out!

Just a comment from a non-breeder who frequents this BB often to hear breeders’ opinions:
I just got a Lord Leatherdale gelding. On first glance he looks a little plain, not the fanciest head but a good one. This young horse so far has shown an amazing temperament, confidence and elastic movement. He does not when standing have an uphill appearance, but it is there when he moves.
The temperament is the thing that most everyone notices straight off.
I did not see the dam, as I purchased him from a trainer in Holland, so I have no way of knowing what the mare was like, which is important too.

I’ve seen all of these horses come through the stallion selections at den Bosch, and none has been terribly impressive; however, when they come back the next year and are shown under saddle, they’re amazing. This year, I had the good fortune to be at the first annual Offspring Show of all newly approved stallions, and got to see 10 of Everdale’s first foals with their dams–super. Absolutely super. The type varied, but they all had really good self-carriage and excellent use of the body. We have an Everdale due out of our foundation Jazz mare this year–I’m pretty excited. I’m absolutely convinced he’s a black colt…

Hi Scot, I also have a Jazz mare in foal to Everdale as well as Flash Gordon’s dam, Bardot S. E. by Florencio! I am sooooo excited! (Also bred my Contango/Doruto mare to Charmeur for a guaranteed chestnut!) We’ll have to exchange pics next spring!

I wanted to add that a friend of mine in Holland bred her Special D mare to Everdale last year. It was the first time she bred anything, first foal, etc. The mare had a colt and she was absolutely thrilled when he went first premium and was bought by the Van Olst family as a stallion prospect! The mare is rebred to Fairytale now, but talk about beginner’s luck!
