Lorenzini Bits

I just found one for cheap, and thought I’d give it a shot for my very soft-mouthed, will go behind-the-vertical when stressed horse.

I love it! He loves it. He’s been consistently reaching out and down to the bit, taking a much steadier contact that I can really work with. It’s just a plain loose ring with a lozenge in the middle. Aside from the neat difference in the contact, when I bridle him I just sort of put it near his head and he goes right for the bit, and sucks on it for a while while I’m taking the bridle off.

I figured I’d let others know that at least for me, it works for this kind of horse.

Glad you like it! Out of curiosity have you noticed any change in salivation? Since titanium doesn’t corrode readily at all, there’s nothing really on the bit to produce a taste for the horse. That’s been my main hesitation in buying one.

Yeah, oddly enough, I’d say more salivation than with his old KK bit. He’s not been one to ever salivate much, but I can see some on his lips and definitely more on the bit.

I’d been wanting to try new bits, particularly Lorenzini and some of the NS bits, but these are so expensive I’d written them off until I found this one for cheap on Ebay.

Several horses in my program go in the Lorenzini bits as well, and they absolutely salivate more. They are a terrific choice for the horses who tend to curl, and for those in colder climates, the titanium doesn’t conduct, so it stays the same temperature independent of the yucky winter weather!

For the horses for whom they work, they’re incredible. For the big strong pigs… not so much.

I used them in my double last season. While I initially liked them - better contact for a horse that tended to be really light in the contact - I ended up with a big problem by the end of the year. My horse, who never even needed a flash when at any point, began to hang his mouth wide open. I couldn’t even touch the rein and he’d be gaping. The diameter of the Lorenzini was smaller than my original copper bits which might have been part of the problem.

FWIW - I had way less salivation in the Lorenzini than in my previous copper bits.

Interesting, very interesting. That’s not something I would have expected, just from a chemical standpoint. I’ll definitely have to consider one the next time I’m bit shopping.
