Los Angeles Hunter-Jumper Barns ( Calabasas/ Thousand Oaks +/- Moorpark Area)

I’m currently finishing up a medical residency program and looking at moving back to the LA area in the next year. I have a few leads on jobs, but nothing concrete as of yet. I rode in the LA area as a child with an AA level hunter-jumper barn but on what I’m hoping to get as a salary that’s going to be out of my price range. I have a lovely 18 yr old gelding that’s leased to a friend in CA now and will be moving with me when I’m done with the residency. He knows his job (3’-3’6 EQ mainly) and just needs exercise to stay in shape as opposed to significant schooling. Ideally I’d like to keep it at $1000 - at most $1500 a month (as opposed to the $2k at the AA level barns in the area). I’d like to find a trainer that puts the horses first and one with experience looking for and bringing along a young horse to the 3’6 EQ/jumpers as my older guy is going to need to step down in the future. I’m looking more for a smaller local show barn that may do a few A shows a year (though if a bigger show barn fits in the price range I’m open!)

Is this realistic in that area? Any suggestions? I’d like within 30-40 minutes of the Woodland Hills area and in a direction that’s not too bad as far as traffic.

I have been very impressed with Shauna Pennell. She is very nice, a good rider, does a good job with the young horses. At the shows I always say to myself that if I lived near her, I would ride with her. She is in Moorpark. I don’t know what she charges but you should check her out

Agreed, she is great.

What Bristol Bay said… Jeni Brown! Hands down, fantastic, the best!

Foxfield in Westlake Village.

Mark Watring.

All good reccomendations. I was going to say Shauna as well, just because she would likely be more affordable, though I don’t know that for sure. Is Wynn Morrow still training? She and Shauna used to be at neighboring farms in Moorpark. I rode with her at a few shows and thought she was great.

Ummmm…Thousand Oaks and Moorpark aren’t in Los Angeles County, and hate
being thought of as part of that area. They’re in Ventura County…which is a completely different mindset than L.A.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Gives me hope that riding in LA will be possible on a good but not fantastic salary. Mardi - fair enough. The area where I’m looking to live is in LA county and the Ventura area will be the easiest place to ride from there.

If you’re looking for great training and the horse is always first, then Shaunna is the best.

Not sure if you have found a barn yet, try Marlowe Show Stables in Shadow Hills CA. Its really close to you, & in that price range. They’re great!!

I have known Nicole for eons!

Edmonton Farms (Sheri Moser & Duncan McIntosh) for sure - they are at Hansen Dam Equestrian Center.

Know idea if this would work but isn’t Nick K (can’t pronounce or spell his last name) right in Calabasas?

Karazissis That’s the spelling can’t pronounce it.

Well, they have a good groom…

Sandrine Sieffert at Hansen Dam. Great rider and trainer. The barn does all the shows big shows in the area and some of the smaller shows for the lower level riders. I sent my horse to her for training when I was having trouble with him and she totally fixed our issues.
