Lots of thought... on feeding my boys

Depends on the mill. You can always call to check on a particular mill. Nothing wrong with feeding Nutrena.

I am kinda thinking the same thing. I am leaning more towards the Enrich 32 because the store where I can get it from is like a 20 minute drive…but they won’t be able to get it in until next Friday. In the meantime should I just keep them on the crypto…or should I get TC Lite and start the boys on that while they still have crypto left over then just add in the enrich 32? Not sure how to go about this, I am sure I am making it more difficult then what it needs to be. Lol

It does make it a bit more difficult but I think it’s worth it though.Do you have enough of the CA till Friday? Or you can skimp on the CA to make it last till Friday? If your short on CA might just be easier to get another bag of it…to get you through. No sense in buying tc lite just to switch them to Purina. Then you can switch to Purina enrich and slowly faze out the CA.

If your horse’s are in good weight they’ll be fine getting less feed for a week. As long as they have hay all the time.

I was buying feeding nutrena ,and I quit buying feeding it. Feed mill I buy from is family owned they dont do mass production. And have never had contamination issues. They dont handle any cattle feed. They have there own brands of feed also…so I have that choice too.

@tazycat yes I think I do have enough of the CA to last me until Friday… and I just told the store in Nowata to order me the Enrich 32 and I will be in next Saturday to pick it up!!!

Use up what you have left and transition slowly to the new feed of your choice. I would not bother adding in a third feed.

Nothing is going to happen to your horses if you don’t feed any grain for a few days. The Crypto in the amount you were feeding is adding little to their diet.

Personally what I would do is ration out the Crypto if possible so that I could then gradually transition to the new feed of your choice. But no harm will come if you just use up the bag of Crypto, feed only hay for several days, then introduce your new feed of choice slowly.

I have lost track if there are other regular components to your current diet, but if you were also feeding hay cubes or whole oats or whatever, just keep on with the same menu, and as each component is used up, just drop it out.

I am not familiar with the American brands being discussed, but I assume that you have selected a ration balancer that meets your general nutrition targets? If so, just be sure that you are feeding the recommended amount. If you feed under the recommended amount you are not getting the nutrients the rb is meant to supply. If they ask for a pound of rb per day, feed a pounr, not a cup. Get a scale and measure the contents of your scoop so you know what you are feeding.

Hay plus a good RB is a good foundation. Feed that for a month or so, and then you evaluate whether you need more protein or more calories, or more exercise.

I have decided to go with Enrich 32… there is a small town feed store about 20 minutes of me that has agreed to get in a few bags for me…I asked him/her (messaged them on FB) if they thought other customer would buy it and he/she said that they have tried they don’t buy it. But they did say that they get Purina in every week so it shouldn’t be a problem getting it.

And I am thinking feeding 2lbs of it starting out, and maybe adding some OmegaFields flax seed…

Yes that seems right according to the extensive instructions on line.

So my horses have been on the Purina Plus Enrich for since the beginning of December and I have added 1/2 cup of Omega HorseShine and my horses look so much better then what they did… so thank you again for the feeding guidance…and getting me back on the right track…

Glad your horses are doing well and hope you are saving some $$ over the CA! If you want to save even more, switch to Triple Crown ground flax and ditch the Omega Horse Shine. The TC has a 2 year shelf life once you open the bag.

I agree, OHS is a very over-priced ground flax product. It seems to think that the mild fortification is worth way more than it really is.

I feed onlhy the enrich 32 and hay. Works great !

I can’t easily get TC - Atwoods carry’s Complete, Lite and Senior i think but that’s all the line of TC they will carry. :frowning:

Would just getting flax seed and grinding it up myself be cheaper?

Do you have an actual feed store near you?

I order a 50 lb bag of flax through my local feed dealer. It costs me $20.00.

I feed it whole. I could get ground as well but my horses like the whole.

Yes, buying whole and not paying someone to do the work of grinding is always cheaper.

You don’t even need to grind it  I always saw beautiful results on flaxseed, fed unground. Occasional pretty blue flax flowers in the field, but not many!

They won’t order it for you? I have to order mine, but it’s worth the wait. I think I pay around $25-$30 for a 20-25 lb bag. Whole flax is $1 a pound, fresh ground flax is $1.50ish a lb.

I seriously doubt they you order it when i asked them if they could get in TC 30% they wanted me to buy a whole pallet of it…
