Thank you JB!
I will try again tonight, last night I did that and it took it forever to upload…
I really find it’s easier to upload pics to imgur.com. You can copy/paste the pic directly into the body of your message from there.
Didn’t I read that Triple Crown joined up with Purina? So does that mean that Purina will be making Triple Crown feeds in their ionophores free manufacturing plants?
I sent a message to Nowata Ranch Supply and they don’t carry those 2 brand but they can get Enrich 32… by next Friday - I am waiting on a call back from our local Atwoods to see if they can get TC 30% - in the meantime I think I might get a bag of the Nutrena Empower Topline Balance and start the boys on something different while I still have a bag of the Crypto left… so I can switch them over.
Triple Crown has contracted with Purina to have Purina mill their feed, mainly on the east coast. The specific mills are listed here:
https://www.triplecrownfeed.com/wp-c…aign=PurinaFAQ
I don’t think you’re in the region affected, but TCN doesn’t do any of their own milling–you’ll have to do some digging to find out who mills for your region.
Since this is a big concern for you, I would call Triple Crown, or Nutrena, or whoever, and ASK if the mill that is producing the feed for your region is ionophore free. They are generally very forthcoming with the information.
Right, the Purina/TC milling agreement is for the East Coast, and while I’m not positive that doesn’t affect OK, I think it doesn’t. But you’d need to call.
If you call mills, make sure you’re asking about ionophore free, not just ionophore safe. The former means there aren’t any ionophores in that mill. The latter only means they are supposed to be thoroughly cleaning the chutes between batch of feed.
I spoke to Stacey at TC and asked her if the mills that produce feed for my region is ionophore free and she said that they have a contract with Blue Bonnet feeds and they produce their feeds out of Ardmore, OK and they are ionophore free.
But she did tell me that the Atwoods is a little hard to work with, that they only agreed to carry TC Complete, Senior and Lite and that they do not do any special ordering she did say though the Mid America Feeds in Talala - carries TC 30%…even though they don’t show it on their website… (i would have to send them a message or call them I guess) she also mention that the TC Lite is similar to the 30% the only thing is is you feed 2lbs instead of the 1lb of the 30%…
But I can still of the feed store in Nowata order me Enrich 32 -
If you feed 1lb of TC30 or 2lb of TCLite, the nutrition is fairly similar, with one exception - calories. You will be feeding roughly twice the calories with the TCLite than with the TC30. Right now, with colder temps and them needing more weight, that is probably fine. You could always start with that and switch to TC30 or another RB if you see them putting on too much weight and you need to cut calories.
Is it a whole lot easier if you can find something they keep on hand and sell normally. Special ordering can sometimes be a real pain, especially if you have to do it forever…
i got a response to my email that I sent to Atwood’s last night and they said that I would have buy a whole pallet if they special ordered the TC 30%, here is their response:
Brandi Bryant, Thank you for contacting Atwoods. Currently we are not stocking this feed in our stores.
We could special order the product. We have to buy in pallet quantities, which would require you having to buy 40 bags at a time…
Retail would be $32.99 per bag. If you are interested, please speak to the store manager at the Bartlesville store. Thank you for shopping with Atwoods.
I would worry about storage on that many bags, keeping the rodents at bay and freshness during certain times of the year. Not to mention the cost!!
I would go with TC Lite and just feed the larger amount. At least it is worth a try.
You don’t have to do a ration balancer, you could feed whatever available feed that floats your boat and add a vit/ min supplement if you can’t feed the recommended amount.
Holly cow that would be 1,319 dollars for all that feed. And you’d probably lose part of it to spoilage or rodents. That would be a no go for me way too much money. I’ll pay 22.50 for feed, but not over 30 sorry i wouldn’t feed any feed for that price.
I would not buy a whole pallet of feed to feed two horses! At one pound per horse per day, assuming a 50 lb bag, it would take you almost three years to use it up. It will be moldy and full of mice long before that.
So my options are TC Lite or Nutrena Empower Top line Balance at Atwood’s, Enrich 32 at the Nowata Store which they could order for me and get in stock next Friday… there is also another store that could get me TC 30%…
there is no way I could afford that.
I’d feed Nutrena Empower Balance. My friend feeds that to her easy keepers and they do very well on it. They are shiny even in their winter coats. She feeds 1.5 lbs for her 1000 lb chunk and .5 lbs to her ponies.
Plus its readily available and no special ordering needed.
Does anybody know if Nutrena makes their feed in ionophore free mills?
OP, if I were you I would feed 1 cup of TC Lite and a smallish scoop of a vite-min mix like Uckele’s. Your horses don’t need the recommended dose of TC Lite.
Personally I’d go with tc lite, i’d stay away from nutrena feeds. Or do Purina’s enrich RB. Yeah there’s plenty who feed nutrena with no issue. But I don’t think it’s worth risking.
Just my opinion take it for what its worth.
