Lou Pena Immediately Suspended After 1,700 Drug Violations

Wow… Just… Wow!

WTF  2 years and 4 months of testing with 1700 violations. What’s “immediate” about any of that?

The way I’m understanding this is that the violations weren’t discovered by tests, but that they subpoenaed his veterinary records and worked backwards from there. At least I hope so, because if they let him get to 1700 before pulling the plug, then you’d have to consider pulling the plug on the NYSRWB.
Does make you wonder about the testing process in NY too.

Note to dopers… tell your vet to not given you a written bill!

I’m pretty sure that’s how it went down… They got a hold of his vet records and saw that he was giving these horses drugs within the 48hour window before racing them. Crazy though that the horses never tested positive!

That makes sense. I couldn’t figure out how some of those things caused a bad test.

No bad tests, but legal things administered after cutoff time. They never did find a bad test, BUT you don’t take a 10K claimer, requalify it and then win open without something being used. CHRB chased Pena for years and years, then he bolted to the east coast. Hopefully, we are rid of him, and with 1700+ violations at 25K a pop, he may well be gone. I’ve been watching this for the last few years and wondering when it was going to happen.
