I am considering coming to WEG after all, if I can swing it logistically.
Unfortunately, flying on points is only possible if I fly into Louisville. Renting a car to get to Lexington is possible but relatively expensive. Are there any affordable and easy ways to get to Lexington?
I can also fly into Cincinnati, are there any options there?
The rent car is the best answer on that one. Have you shopped all the agencies for pricing? used Priceline/Expedia etc?
It’s about an hour straight shot on the interstate between the 2 cities. No trains. The bus stations would be downtown to downtown and leave you afoot…and in the company of some…er…sketchy traveling companions.
Do the car.
2nd the car. That is really the only way. It is a very easy (and beautiful!) drive straight down I-64 from Louisville to Lexington. You can make it in less than an hour if traffic is light.

Renting a car will cost a minimum of $230 based on my travel dates. If I do this trip at all, it will be on the cheap!
Would you just be flying in to Louisville and staying in Lex? Or would you be going back and forth the whole time? If just flying in maybe you could catch a ride. There are lots of people driving back and forth, myself included as I am a volunteer. There are then shuttles from lots of hotels in Lex.
Where are you planning to stay? There should be shuttles.
When I was shopping flights, Cinci & L’ville were the same price. I chose based on my host’s preference for driving.
With some creativity, you may be able to find a ride/carpool…
I’d suggest posting the dates you’d like to go, and seeing if CotH can make it happen!
If you have airline points, do you have a credit card with an airline partner?
I decided two weeks ago to do the WEG trip, and all the points flights to Lexington were long gone. However, I have a United Airlines/Chase Visa card. I was able to book the exact flights I wanted, which came to an astronomical $830. When the credit card bill arrives, I get on United’s Mileage Plus/Choices site, and enter the flight amount chargecode number on the cc bill, and Poof! it disappears and turns into mileage deducted from my points total.
I have done this before when I wanted a certain flight, and it actually works.

I agree that the Louisville-Lexington drive is quite lovely! I did it back in 2002. That time, as with this time, points wouldn’t let me fly into Lexington.
I think Cincinnati may be the airport of choice. I’m on hold to find out from air miles. The group I would be staying with will be arriving on the same day as me, so hopefully I can coordinate my arrival and catch a ride with them. I need to leave earlier than the group by several days, though, and need to figure out that leg of the journey.

Oh, just for refernece, the Cincinnati airport is actually in Kentucky. Yeah, it’s weird.
There are your standard airport shuttle services from both Cincinnati and Louisville, but they’re not cheap, I seem to recall around $50 per person. If you’re a single, it might be cheaper than a car.
That said, also if you’re just one person, you might be able to catch a ride with someone else who is renting a car.

The first time I realized that we’d taken a red-eye in and we had a 4 hour layover in CVG waiting for our final flight to Lexington. All bleary eyed, all the bathrooms were citing Kentucky state law about cigarettes or something, and that’s when I realized we could have just driven from there and arrived sooner!

I’ve googled around and haven’t been able to find anything. Can you point me in the right direction? $50 is fine. Even both ways, its cheaper than renting a car.

Your rent car prices are going to be about the same but Cincy prices may be heavily influenced by both college and pro sports activity that pull fans in to the area-especially the upcoming (hopefully)baseball playoffs and NFL on Sundays that sell out routinely.
Oh…and Super Shuttle or similar? That won’t leave you any way to get around Lexington, to and from your hotel to the KHP. I work at CVG and can tell you it is more then 50usd each way to Lexington-and Super Shuttle does not serve the area. The van service that does operate charged me $70 for a 45 mile drive home when my car broke down in the parking lot and they were out of rent cars
You know, the entire area, except for right in the cities, is really pretty rural, a car is the best choice and Louisville is probably a beter jumping off point price wise.
You know I just read this thread and I don’t even need a ride/any help w/ transportation.
I just wanted to say that you folks are a treasure! The helpfulness and sharing of information. No wonder it’s so much fun to get to meet some of you!
Plus if you stay in Louisville you can hit Churchill Downs (I’m biased)
