Low-Calorie/Diet/Lite Dog Food Recommendations?

Dear all,

I’m trying to get weight off my 7 year old Australian Cattle Dog with a thyroid problem. He’s on thyroid medication, but even with that and an increase in his exercise routine he’s not dropping weight. I had him at the vet today to check his thyroid levels and he has actually gained weight since the last time we were there.

I’ve been feeding him the Blue Buffalo Wilderness Healthy Weight formula for ages, one cup 2x per day (which is less than what is recommended for a dog his size… even at the size he should be). But something about this just isn’t working for him, because he is just not slimming down.

I’d love to hear your input on diet dog foods if you have a chance.

Thanks, everyone!

I had great luck with using Wellness Core low-fat to get weight off my boxer (also with a thyroid problem and chronic pancreatitis).

It’s not my favorite food in the world, but now we mix it half and half with Acana; ironically to keep weight on him now that he is more fit and active.

I found that those light foods are garbage -mostly filler and not satisfying for the dog. I’ve successfully reduced dogs using high protein, now carb food. At the time I used Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato. A friend of mine had a few dogs once. One was diabetic so he was on a diabetic diet, and his beagle was fat. They were always trying to reduce that fat beagle. When the diabetic dog passed they just fed the diabetic food to the fat beagle et voila! We joked that her legs got longer. Again here we’re seeing the effect of high protein, low carb.
