LRK3D & Coronavirus

I removed the New YorK times article because I think you are right that it was a bit over the top. ( If it had been posted two weeks ago I would have agreed it was fear mongering.) Having said that doctors that are on the front line treating this have said that they have triage procedures in place and will use them if needed and people need to know that, we have passed the point that censorship will accomplish anything in regards to having less panic. When you say that The New York Times should sit out two weeks it does not sit well with me. We need to get the information out in an appropriate way and in a timely manner.

I agree that people have over reacted in regards to some medical supplies and house hold goods and wish there was a way to limit the number that people can get/ medical staff had priority when it can to getting these things.

I have spent time in New York and live in Northern California, two area that are know to have the virus. There is nothing keeping me from going to Kentucky in April. I have no symptoms and don’t think I have been around someone with the virus ( but due to people having it and not showing any symptoms it’ can be hard to tell ). What keeps me from going is being well informed through media and government sources .

Thank you.

Now maybe we can work on the Washington Post which is just now posting a article about geometric progression and the epidemic. All with exciting and groovy moving graphics. Lots of praise on twitter. There’s a problem. Not only is this a “could soon” story, epidemics don’t follow geometric progression curves–nothing in nature does. The science is that epidemics follow Gompertz Curves and both the China numbers and the South Korean numbers seemed to be aligning with that type of growth curve. Gompertz curves level off and look a lot less scary.

This is crap journalism done by people that think they are a whole lot smarter than the are. We deserve better. Not only is it wrong, it too is whipping up fear and selling papers/creating clicks. There’s a reason journalists have an even lower approval rating than Congress–which I didn’t even think was possible.

@subk
I am going to agree to disagree with you on this one. I have listed below one Washington Post Article which deals with what people should and shouldn’t be doing and two CNN podcasts. The first one from a doctor who id treating patients in New York and the second one is an interview withDr. Anne Schuchat, Principal Deputy Director of the CDC. Both could be considered “could soon” stories. ( and I will bet even as well done as these are they would still cause some people to panic).

They posted on FB this morning that they will make an official statement within a few days. I am sure they will cancel it. The KY governor just announced closing all restaurants/bars in KY. I honestly do not see how they will be able to keep the event as scheduled, unfortunately

Just received an email from LRK3D saying pretty much the same thing as skipollo posted. Monitoring. It’s not for another 6 weeks but these sorts of things it’s not like you can wait until the week before to say yes its a go or not it’s not. Damn virus.

I can’t imagine that the April date isn’t going to be canceled, given the latest CDC guidelines and 8-week time frame. My speculation is that the delay in announcing is to see if they can postpone rather than completely cancelling.

I also agree that there has been some great journalism out there and thank goodness. I find the demonization of the press esp in the US chilling.

Canada has closed its borders to everyone BUT the US. Canadians urged to head home now per the PM.

Europe also closing its borders. Its fair to say this would be a US/Canada competition only if it goes forward.

It won’t. Canadians being told to stay home. Only a matter of time til we are fully shut down like Italy and Spain.

And with no preps, what does this mean heading toward the Olympic Games? That is, assuming that they will be held at all.

Do the upper level horses remain in constant training or do they get a nice break? Seems that this might be the time to be starting new prospects–assuming the barns keep running.

I can’t imagine the Olympics can move forward - all other sports are on hold as well. I don’t know swimming and track & field that well so maybe those sports can fit in trials and selections if things are settled by end of April but who knows. I see gymnastics listed on cable guide but with some sports you never know if they’re live or repeats from 2-3 years ago.

Cindy- Are you finally listening?

There’s no way the Olympics can go on. It’s Abe’s fantasy. It’s just a high-stakes negotiation that Japan wants to push it back to the fall and the IOC doesn’t and they will haggle it out. I am convinced that, despite all the public pronouncements, neither party actually thinks it’s going to go off in July.

Well done interview. Thanks for sharing.

Re: the 2020 Olympics and Covid-19, Canada has just announced that it will not be sending any athletes. They are suggesting postponement to 2021. It will be interesting to see if any other countries follow suit.
