All FEI events cancelled or recommended to be cancelled for 30 days
I have a friend who is very well connected in Asia (Asia editor of a major non-tabloid UK paper). He is reporting today that in his discussions with officials there is currently at “70%” chance the Olympics will be cancelled.
I would research ( as in get on either the CDC or world health organization website) and determine if you or someone close to you is at risk and make a decision based on that. I don’t think we need to panic yet but to make uninformed decisions is probably not a smart thing to do with this virus.
My 2 cents as a local.
Churches have been asked to refrain from services, Keeneland has now canceled it’s April sale. UK will switch to online study for a short time after SB. All of my current club and board meetings have been cancelled. There is absolutely no toilet paper to be had within three counties, grocery shelves are starting to look bare. Some small clinics don’t even have testing kits yet.
Very thankful I can still go ride & take in the fresh air. Starting to wonder if things will go off as usual at the KHP?
You should be able to buy others tickets cheap! GO!
If there was a strangles outbreak, would you be shipping your horse to shows? Probably not. It is generally courteous to offer humans the same thoughtfulness.
I don’t think people will be kicking themselves for not going into crowds later. This is not an over-reaction.
By all accounts, following stricter protocols has made a significant difference in the number of cases.
While I am unconcerned about me getting sick - I have no desire to bring this to someone else. Would you want to be the one that killed someone’s Nana?
Now, the hoarding of toilet paper and such - that is an overreaction.
Word!
I’ve been asking the same thing in my blog and I am more than ever before totally convinced people actually would.
Cause now with all events being cancelled plenty of trainers have seen this as an opportunity to put in some extra cross country training sessions on their agenda and claim; we have no physical close contact…
How likely is it that the participants have been exposed?
For some participants, there is enough of a chance of exposure that it would be better not to participate. For others, there is just about zero chance of exposure.
It’s possible to apply some common sense judgments and carry on from there.
If you ask the people of Italy they might argue against you. Maybe doomsday prepping isn’t all necessary but it can not hurt to have a little bit extra of the basics in house at a time like this.
I just wonder how the riders will prep for Land Rover? They have just the right number of events scheduled, leading up to Kentucky. I guess it will be like the old days, when horses are not shown much before a big event?
As a Jump Judge, I have been receiving updates, from Equestrian Events. So far, things are a go, but that was before the 30 day suspension of all events from yesterday.
As I am in the “at risk” catagory, I may have to stay home anyway.
One thing everyone might what to consider is that medical professionals are already talking about how they might have to triage people if medical staff/ facilities/ supplies become low. Meaning that as this gets worse if you bring it home to an elderly or sick member of your household they might not get the medical treatment if some else is determined to have a better chance of surviving.
Oh for God’s sake. Mass media scaremongering at its worse. If an article starts with the words “could soon” in its first sentence it’s a big clue that its purpose is to whip up fear. I wish the big media outlets would take 2 weeks off like the rest of us. We’d all be better off.
For the record, I spent my morning volunteering in the office of a business who is supplying nursing homes around the country with additional N95 masks. The story here is the effort that is going on right now in prevention, not speculating on possible worse case scenarios with breathless anticipation as if its news.
That’s why I also posted the podcast which is an interview with a doctor at ground zero in New York who is asking people for the sake of at risk populations to start taking things concerning this virus seriously . The doctor says yes they have procedures in place to triage who will get treated if it comes to that and no one is sure it won’t!
I also have a sister who is a nurse supervisor at a company that provides in home care for elderly and infirm people in the same area. The company she works for has put out information concerning how to handle Covid19 and part of what they say is to stay at home and limit contact with people from the outside.
Honestly I think at this point we need to start thinking about worse case scenarios when:
- we have people in this country who are dying from this disease.
- we have health care professionals on the frontline that are truly concerned about this!

Also to make myself very clear I am not saying don’t go, I am saying educate yourself and make an informed decision. Sticking your head in the sand because it doesn’t affect you directly or you don’t like the way the media is handling the situation is dangerous!
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.
Use common sense which is becoming unbelievably uncommon.
Medical supply companies are happily shipping supplies, good for them But is this really "good"news?
I haven’t clue as to what CRNA stands for, but I’'m assuming from your posts no intelligent medical or epidemiological understanding!
No one is sticking their head in the sand. I’m married to an executive in the elderly care industry. The entire field along with every other field that is tangential to healthcare is completely aware of what the worst case scenarios are. So are the rest of us that spend a hot minute a day reading the news that reports real time situations in the rest of the world. All the professionals have been dialed up to full speed for WEEKS on this issue.
But you know what the results are of this crap piece of NYTimes writing? It’s that those industries trying to build up their stock of essential equipment and supplies to protect our most vulnerable citizens are having a harder time doing so. The hardest thing at the moment is hand sanitizer, because some stupid idiot who saw some article posted in her social media that talks about “could soon” has run to CVS/Walgreen in a panic and bought a 2 year supply of the stuff.
Stop enabling the panic. It’s as dangerous than the pandemic.
Hahaha! Masters in anesthesia! I’m older and don’t get too caught up in the media hype. While it is a serious problem, the media is having a grand time making people think they are going to drop dead if the wind blows.
Amen!
