Any idea why Lucinda (and a couple of others) did not jump in the individual medal round although they were qualified to?
Hmm, not sure, but neither did Ostholt (Mr Medicott) for Germany nor Daisy Dick for GB. Is it because they were one of the drop scores for their teams?
Actually I was wondering how they came up with having 25 horses come back to jump when there are only three medals and probably only the top ten really figure in the possibilities. I realize that having only ten people compete for an Olympic medal probably doesn’t sit too well with the IOC, but I would guess some of those 25 riders figured that they had no chance for a medal so why put their horse over another ten or so unnecessary jumps.
Ostholt was in 8th and Fredricks in 10th after the Team jumping. If Ostholt would have gone in the Ind jumping round and gone clear he would have finished .4 of a fault out of bronze.
It’s crazy that riders in the top 10 wouldn’t get to go into the Ind jump off.
The whole Olympic set up for eventing is nuts.
They may have decided that their horses were not up to it and it was not worth the risk. It seems it was more important to the smaller countries (ones without a team) to say they finished 20th in a field of 67 rather than 25th, or something.
To the individuals that have already won a team medal, especially from those countries where they are likely to be able to come back next Olympics, it does not matter as much.
Both Ostholt and Fredricks were in medal contention. Like I said, if Ostholt had gone clear he would have finished in 57.80, the bronze medal was 57.40.
I really doubt he decided to sit it out.
From the looks of who partook in the jump off, there were only a maximum of 3 riders from each country, so I’m thinking that must have been some kind of rule.

I believe the new rule from the IOC is that only three representatives of any one country can compete in an individual final, in order to allow more countries to compete.
God, that is so stupid. Both Germany and Australia had 4 riders in the top 10 after the team jumping, all in medal contention.
Maybe they should make the Olympics a training level course, with each country sending just one athlete, that way Belize, Laos and Moldova can all send a rider… and they can all hold hands and sing Kum Bay Ah.
I know it applies to all sports–there was some fuss about it in the selection of the women’s gymnastics team because athletes compete, they don’t have to be the SAME 3 athletes for all 4 events, and there is no “drop score” anymore.
I think it’s a little dumb but with all the controversies surrounding these olympics, I’m not sure if I was running things for the US that I would have even sent teams.

Hey, I have family that lives in Belize. Perhaps I should investigate getting my Belizean citizenship if the Olympics become a 1/2 star!!!

The idea is to give more riders a chance to get a medal. Yeah, the likelihood that Pawel would have medaled is slim, but he can put his standings in his resume. The riders from the countries that can field a team put their top three up there for medal contention and let the other countries at least have a shot. I’m not seeing a problem with this. I am seeing very sportsmanlike behavior.
