Thanks for sharing, I really liked this perspective - really cool to see the gallops between fences that you don’t get to see in a coursewalk typically.
Since we got to see the gallops, I think the first combo at 5AB, the horses could be not as accurate at 5A, the corner after a long gallop then you have to gallop down to a table at 5B. Will be interesting to watch.
I did not understand some of the lines (mainly within the stadium), but I’m sure it is doable.
One of the waters, 17/18 is interestingly numbered too. I wonder why it is 17AB+18AB, instead of 17ABCD. 17B/18A is related majorly (more related than 17AB or 18AB).
If it is the water I was thinking of, it is a bounce on a island, out if water and back into water. Numbering the bounce as two separate fences is being kind and giving the rider a safe option, fitting in a circle without a penalty, if their ooomph has been affected by the water, as can happen.
Thats the one I was talking about. And that makes more sense since the houses are off set and I see how you could jump them not on an angle and therefore not present both.
It allows the rider to circle between 17B and 18A (circle right and come back at 18A as a single) without penalty.
Nice looking course. It was interesting that at times the course designer specifically mentioned that the jump was a MIM clipped jump and others said nothing. I assume that means that they are not clipped. I am not talking about the skinnies.
Does anyone know why Tom McEwen retired late on course with Brookfield Quality in the 5*? Scoring doesn’t show any refusals. Just a late retire.
Blood in the nose after the long hold due to the thunderstorm, they jumped the arena fences then pulled up before the next water.
What a shame. Thank you for the info.
Michael Jung had a fence down
so…who ended up winning the 4*? I understand Roz had two fences down in the 5*.
Yas
Ros said that although she still has to watch her round back, she suspects Izilot DHI’s inexperience crept in.
“He’s got a lovely long stride and the five down to the planks (fence 11) was a bit short, I got the nice five but whether I lost a bit of impulsion in the process, he just went a bit tight behind,” she said.
“The double (fence 12ab) was quite close to the sides and he just spooked away from those a little bit, and again just went a bit tight behind, that would be the thing he would do slightly.”
“He’s just a young horse that went a bit inexperienced. Often with him we’re in a position where we’re quite high up the leaderboard so it kind of appears more disappointing, but I’ve got a lot to be proud of him for this week.”
Looks like the same thing happened at Luhmuhlen as Kentucky - pairs in serious contention for the Olympics showed in the 4*-S. Yas Ingham won with Banzai and Tom McEwan with JL Dublin right behind in 2nd. Michael Jung ended up 3 & 4 with Chipmunk and Kileandra Ocean Power. Lots of other big names that may have otherwise done the 5* like Tim Price and Falco, Sandra Auffarth and Viamant du Matz, Laura Collett and London 52, Kevin McNab and Scuderia 1918 Don Quidam, and Anna Siemer and FRH Butts Avondale.
I wonder if London 52’s minor injury means he’s going to withdraw from Olympic contention? How quick do coronet band cuts heal?
I thought I read she said she hoped to have him good for consideration. I hate to mention this on CoTH, but EN does a sensational job of updating the live feed.
It is now too close to the Olympics to run a 5 star, so a slightly different situation to Kentucky (where pairs aiming for the Olympics could have run a 5 star, but elected not to for strategic/preparatory purposes). Does make for some powerhouse lineups lower down the sheet!
As with many things - depends
My horse going on 18 months recovering from a coronet band cut that came from an abscess and split her hoof. Hoof wall is just now growing from that spot. I really hope Laura fares better than we have.
