I’ve removed plenty of ticks from plenty of mammals in my time, but I’ve actually never seen a single skin reaction to a tick (including the time my sister’s cat slept in the woodpile and came in with 38 ticks. I counted.)
Found tick on dog in routine check. Removed tick. Visually, tick came off with all parts intact, for whatever that’s worth. Treated spot with triple antibiotic. Three days later, dog still has small, soft lump on tick site. She is a (very!) thick coated, long haired black dog. I’ve parted her hair with a comb and shone a flashlight on it but still can’t get a good visual on what’s going on there, although she’s a total sensitive snowflake and doesn’t mind me fussing with it so it must not hurt.
Suggestions for treatment? If she were a horse I’d put some ichthammol on it to draw out anything that might be stuck in there, but see above on the thick coated, long haired bit.
Dog is treated with Frontline and has the Lyme disease vaccine, for all the good that does.
