Lutalyse-What should I expect??

I have four mares that will be getting a Lutalyse shot today as I am hoping to have them cycle together as closely as possible. I had them on 15 days of ReguMate and then will be giving the Lutalyse today. I know they can still cycle on the ReguMate and that P&E is the way to go. Unfortunately, I had already bought the ReguMate and Lutalyse before I figured that one out:winkgrin:

So…the vet said after the shot is administered they may show signs of colic and will need to be walked. I am wondering what are YOUR experiences with the Lutalyse, and typically how long did it take for the reaction to show (if your horse did react)? I have Banamine on hand…if they show signs of colic, would you recommend giving a shot of Banamine if the signs were severe enough?

I would really appreciate any/all information as I’m pretty nervous about this actually…these girls are my life and I want to make sure I know what to expect for them!

Thanks in advance~

The effects of Lutalyse are short, but your mares probably will sweat and act uncomfortable for a few minutes. Some mares will react more than others. We have given many Lutalyse shots over the years but the first time I saw it used it was scarey  A Vet I worked for actually gave a mare 10 cc’s of Lutalyse. That poor mare was miserable for about 30 minutes. The dosage should have been 1 cc.

I’ve given it a few times and it can be scary if you weren’t warned. One mares sweated so bad that I hosed her to try to help make her more comfortable. One mare went down and acted like she was in labor. I don’t know for sure but from what I’ve seen it looks like horrible menstrual cramps. It didn’t last too long with the ones I’ve seen.

It’s not colic, it’s uterine cramping. I’ve never walked one for that. It can be scary though, the first time you see it - BUT it all depends on the mare. Some are seriously affected, some are not.

I far prefer using the micro dose method of lutalyse now. Even if only a short period of discomfort, why put the mare through that if you don’t have to?

The process is on the Equine Reproduction website.

Thanks everyone for all the replies! I am thinking that I may do 1/10th cc for two days in a row as it sounds easier on my mares. I know how crappy I feel when my cramps hit…I don’t want them to go through that…top it off with its only about 40 degrees here and rainy, I don’t want anyone getting sick if they get sweaty!

Definitely use the micro doses. So much easier and just as effective.

The dose for lutalyse is .2 (2/10s of a cc, 2 days in a row)

I wouldn’t do anything else, and PLEASE tell your vet about the dose. I had a mare colic badly twice after a OLD dose of lutalyse. She coliced bad enough that the vet said to ship her to the EMC if I wanted to save her. The rest have just been horribly painful, and SO worried.

I have been using the .2 dose for years and years. They come in at the same number of days too, and I have even gotten busy and forgot to give the 2nd dose a few times, and just the single dose has worked, although I admit to slightly heavy on the .2 (more like .25) as I want to make sure they get the full .2

If you make a believer out of your vet, mares in the entire area will thank you!

I will definitely let my vet know…it definitely is frustrating as we live in the boonies and only have one “good” vet. The worst part is she knows she is really the only vet around so she jacks her prices up “because she can”. Needless to say, I’m not sending my horses to breed with her:lol: I keep her happy in other ares, but when she charges twice the amount per horse for breeding, etc., than even Anoka Equine (which is one of the best vet clinics in the country), I don’t think so…that price doesn’t include farm calls either!

Back on track…thanks again for the information and I will be sure to do the two doses. I HATE seeing my girls in any kind of discomfort, and if they don’t have to be, they WILL NOT be! I appreciate it!

I was going to suggest the microdose too - others beat me to it! The old way - I went out and had a mare DRIPPING in sweat. Sweat pouring off her from the cramps. 10 minutes later, she was hungry and fine, but it was scary. I figure, even if only a few minutes, why do that to the poor girls? Now, I let nature take its course - try not to use hormones unless I absolutely have to.

BIGI DITTO to what other breeders have posted. We’ve used the 2/10th CC dose for two days and fabulous results - especially with using frozen semen. No sweating, cramping, shaking - I used to feel sick when I gave the large dose to my mares and they did that.

Plus! it’s less expensive and if the Vet left you on big shot you can just squirt the micro dose into another syringe and keep the balance for future use. It doesn’t have to be refrigerated and lasts for years.

I think it may be better to stop calling it a micro-dose. Just call it the cycling doses, like there is no other option. Call the 2 cc an aborting dose. Or maybe just regular usage, and aborting usage.

Sometimes, how people (and vets) think about something (terminology) can make all of the difference in how they feel about it, and their confidence level to prescribe it.

I tried the ‘cycling doses’ for the first time this year, and I’m totally converted. Won’t ever hit my mare with a big dose again.

Have you had success using the ‘cycling dose’ to get rid of a hemorrhagic follicle?
I have a young mare with a stubborn one that will not go away. Wondering if I need to break out the big dose for her. Yuck.

I haven’t used Lutalyse in years.

My vet and most of the repro vets around here use Estrumate, which is for cattle, but works great with horses as well.

Dose is 1cc …you seldom see the colic and sweating and cramps that I used to with LL.

I wonder if you can use micro doses with Estrumate?

No research supports Prosteglandin eliminating hemorrhagics  The only thing that seems to fix those is time… Check her every month, she may let it go in time to breed later in the season. I’ve had those damn things stick around for months… Then let go mid-Summer (or not).

Interesting story - last year, one of my mares developed one - we had bred her, when we did the ultrasound, the vet said nope, she developed a hemorrhagic follicle (and she’d done it the year before, so I was ready to dump her, except the market is so bad). Well, this Spring, she hadn’t cycled, I’m thinking to myself, dang, I’ve never HEARD of one of those darn annovular follicles sticking around THIS long. Had my new vet ultrasound her to figure out what was going on, and she got KICKED by my 9 month old hemorrhagic follicle who has developed legs, head, and body

Well, I gave all my mares the “cycling dose” and want to extend a HUGE thank you for suggesting that! They showed absolutely NO change whatsoever although I was like a worried mother peeking at them for two hours! They will get their second “cycling dose” tomorrow and I’m hoping you will all make a believer out of me. Even if it doesn’t work (don’t worry, I have no doubts:D), my mare’s comfort is my main concern, and I would rather not have them go through that big “shock” and not cycle when I am hoping they will than shock their system. I will keep you all updated as they are going to the vet’s on Monday to be ultrasounded. Wish us luck!

Yes, you can use the micro dose with Estrumate (Cloprostenol). Indeed when using Estrumate (Cloprostenol) you only need to give one 1/10th dose - no need for the two days in a row.
