Lutelyse Q's

My mare is an 8 year old maiden. We are on the second round of lutelyse to try and time breeding because were going AI. We figured the first shot didn’t work because it had been too close to her last heat.

How long should it take before your mare start showing signs of heat or respond to teasing? We gave her the second shot on Tuesday and she still didnt seem to look like anything was happening. She sweated up really well this time the shot was given so I had hoped that meant it was working :frowning:

The corpus luteum has to be destroyed, and then a new follicle has to start growing. Then the mare will begin showing signs of estrus as the follicle gets larger and closer to ovulation. I haven’t had to lutalyse a mare in a long time, but IIRC the time to start expecting estrus is 5-8 days after the shot is given.

haha ok… guess im jumping the gun expecting a heat 3 days after  just a little worrie I will be going on my 3rd ultrasound on Monday so I can just see the dollar signs adding up. Which would be ok if it results in a foal

What does your vet say? Giving it at the wrong time can throw a wrench in things.

My mare needed two doses and then caught on the first cycle, it was her 30 day heat. I was so nervous too but it all worked out!

My vet said the second shot should work. When he have it the first time we weren’t sure when exactly the last heat ended but it had been close to the 5 day mark

If there isn’t an established CL yet (if the shot is given too close after ovulation) then it won’t work.

^ that is what I’m hoping happened anyways!!!

BTW there is a lutelyse protocol that is supposed to be more comfortable for them, PM Kathy St. Martin for it. Her SN is EquineRepro, if I use it in the future this is what I will be doing. I didn’t read it could be uncomfortable for them until later and my mare was long distance at the time, the clinic had said there weren’t any side effects but I later read differently.

Thanks  I think in browsing I did see some posts from her and some taking about lower doses done over 2-3 days I am really hoping this is it and we see something promising soon!!!

It depends on if there is a large follicle present because if you destroy the CL that follicle could then mature and ovulate really quickly. If she just has multiple small follicles when you give the Lute then it will take longer as a dominant follicle needs to mature ect. Also, sometimes a large follicle will regress instead of maturing and another one becomes dominant and grows.

How long after the end of the heat cycle do you give lutalyse?? It’s been years since I gave it!!

If I remember correctly, the shot must be given at least 5 days after ovulation in order to work. In my experience, my mares have ovulated by 5-8 days after receiving a lutalyse injection; though, I read somewhere that mares typically start to show heat 3-5 days after receiving the shot, and that on average mares ovulate between 7-9 days. I don’t think “sweating up” after the shot is a sign it works, rather, a sign of discomfort (and geldings, when given the same shot, can also get very sweaty although clearly they won’t “come into heat” LOL). I will look for the articles I read to post back here, and cross your fingers the pros (Kathy and Jos) respond!

Here are some articles that I found that will hopefully help you OP:

Thanks guys!!!

Well despite her not really showing signs of being in heat, the vet came out today and SUPRISE there was a 43mm follical ready to burst. SO I ended up driving 2 hours each way to the stallion owner and met my vet back at our place at 7:30pm to breed.

WHat a long day! LOL

And just for interest sake, she was at 6 days post-lute shot

Fingers crossed that now she will ovulate!

He gave her a shot of something to get her to drop the egg… But he is going to use the second dose this morning. He didnt think the second dose was really necessary though

Now I’m just waiting until we see the little black dot!!!
