I have been having lameness issues with my horse, and she has no history of lameness, so my vet suggested a lyme test. I’m waiting on the results and I was just wondering if anyone could give rough estimate of prices for treatment with Doxy… or anyhting.
It depends on a few things, but I just ordered doxy yesterday, it was $141 shipped for 60 doses (30 day supply). So $282 for the entire treatment (we do 60 days here). This is for compounded doxy at 6gm per scoop. Plus the cost of daily probiotics, which is maybe $20 total for the whole time. Plus ulcer meds at preventative dose (1/4 tube or equivalent).
That is so comforting actually! Thank you!
I can get IV oxy tet done for 7 days for 320$ horse kept at vet clinic for that time. That 320$ includes treatment feed bedded/stall and cleaning. No hassle on my part ,horse gets cared for and i just pick it up at end of treatment. One horse i owned that had lyme was treated with IV oxy tet and never got sick again. Only did 7 days IV treatment,he was back to normal in 2 days.
Wow that’s really inexpensive! I might look in to oxy tet because I hear a lot of people say it’s more affective then Doxy
IV oxytet will most definitely be more expensive than oral doxy. We do oxy-tet for severe cases, but always follow with 30-45 days of either doxy or minocycline. And my vets always just put a catheter in and I give the ABx myself. If I had to pay for hospital stay for a week or pay the vet to administer.
My invoice from when my horse had anaplasmosis and got oxy-tet had the cost per dose at $27.45, and the catheter at $126.82 plus all the flushes, needles, syringes, etc. That puts you well over $320 without even a farm call, let alone the cost of hospital admission. Prices vary, of course, but you might want to ask your vet about pricing.
My gelding had Lyme at least 10 years ago when doxy was the only treatment. He felt a lot better after a couple of days but was on it for 6 weeks. I think that made the difference. More recent information indicates that the spirochete burrows into tissues. The spirochete can re-emerge and if you don’t drugs long enough the infection will start up again. BO learned about this recently from the human Lyme specialist when her son was diagnosed. He was on three rounds of drugs with a short break between them.
I have always thought that too many horses are not treated long enough. We used compounded doxy powder with a little peppermint flavoring in some grain. He was boarded outside, which wasn’t a problem, but I did have someone who was able to give him his evening dose, and he only missed one in the six week cycle. It wasn’t cheap. I think at the time I spent almost $600 with the blood test. The possible complications of inadequate treatment are pretty severe for the horse, so I’m glad I opened my wallet, swallowed hard, and did the 6 weeks.
6 mg? Or 6 gm? People dose is 100 mg BID, can’t imagine horse dose is so little?
According to my vet, Minocycline (sp) is more effective than Doxy. It used to be more expensive than doxy, but since the proie of doxy went up, the minocycline is actually cheaper. Unfortunately, I do not remember the actual price…
Grams! Whoops. Fixed it.
I specified 6gm because there’s also a 5gm per scoop dose for smaller and/or normal sized horses.
My vet treats with minocycline as well. I’ve treated two horses with the mino with very satisfactory results within 30 days. Cost for me was $190 for a 500-count bottle of 100mg capsules. The dosage for my horse was 20 capsules (2g) 2z/day.
My vet also highly recommends treating with Equiotic probiotics while on the antibiotics. It isn’t cheap, but it does seem worth it.
We do a week of IV Oxytet, and then 4-8 weeks of minocycline depending on what the level was.
