MA Hunt Peeps

I have been perusing the idea of joining one of my local hunts… I’ve shot off some probing emails to my NY hunt friends, but what can you tell a hunt newbie like myself about hunting in this area? What kind of fee is normal for this area, and what type of etiquette/decorum/tack/outfit should I expect?

TIA

I have no useful information but am subscribing to this thread because I would love to get started as well.

The Guilford Hounds went through Old Deerfield a few weeks ago, and it was amazing. I was so jealous!

This is a great way to see what would be within a reasonable driving distance to you.

The next thing I would do would be to contact the secretary of each hunt that would work distance wise and then find a time that would be good to cap.

Each hunt has a slightly different way of hunting and a different mix of people. By capping several times with a couple of different hunts, you will be able to decide which one suits you the best.

I’m not sure about the ones in your area, but some of the hunts in my area have websites that list the yearly dues.

Speaking on behalf of Old North Bridge Hounds we would welcome you to come back and ride with us again in the Spring. Please PM me if you would like more information.

Where are you in MA? I’ve been out with Tanheath Hunt from CT, and their fixtures are not too far if you’re south of Worcester.
I attended the New England Hunts hunter trials this past fall and met members and staff from the participating hunts. Everyone was fun and friendly! I’m certain that if you contact the staff of the hunts nearest to you you’ll be happy with the responses. Best of luck to you.

Thanks everyone for the replies - I am studying up the formalities now.

I’ll PM you

Beowulf: I have a friend who lives in Groton who is not on this forum. If you’re interested, PM me and I can put you guys in touch. She’s ridden with Old North Bridge and with Wentworth.

Anyone interested in coming out with ONBH in the spring, just PM me. We will likely have a hunt clinic either before we start hunting or early on. I would be happy to bring a COTH member as a guest and can help suggest fixtures that are good first hunts.
